80 years ago, on August 6, 1945, the United States committed one of the most atrocious crimes in human history and plunged the world into a nuclear dark age. It dropped nuclear weapons on Hiroshima, Japan and mass murdered an estimated 70,000 to 140,000 people, mostly civilians, instantly.

This is us. Of all our atrocities, this one is probably the one most memory holed. And we even chose to do it twice. Even with this dark precedent, we've survived a few generations with enough institutional restraint to not repeat this nuclear holocaust. All institutional restraints are now gone.

True, the anti nuke bomb peeps are largely ignorant of the firebombing campaign. But in the Industrial Age, war industries are legit targets in Total Wars & so are the workers building the Industrial Age's weapons. Time Life: WWII Bombers Over Japan.

A ROSTER OF TARGETS OBLITERATED The toll extracted by the B-29s was mind- numbing. By August 14, a total of 602 ma- jor Japanese war industries and military in- stallations had been destroyed or severely damaged; inland shipping had been vir- tually eliminated; and nearly half of the aggregate area of 66 cities-178 square miles-had been razed. Of the sectors within those cities that had been designated as targets, the Super- fortresses leveled an astonishing 92 per cent. And in one city, the chemical and textile manufacturing center of Toyama (pages 200-201), the devastation was total. The aerial photographs on these and the following pages are representative entries in the B-29s' ledger of destruction. In each instance, the percentage given indicates the portion of the targeted area within each city or industrial complex destroyed by the War's end. image image image

Debate still rages, to this day, over whether the Japanese would still have surrendered if the atomic bombs hadn't been used. It is true that if the US had carried out Olympic and Coronet, the invasion of Japan, it could have resulted in over one million dead. 1/

General MacArthur actually opposed the use of atomic weapons, as did General Kenney. The decision to drop the bomb is one of the most controversial in all of military history. My own opinion, FWIW, is that by August 1945, Japan was a beaten nation; she would likely have surrendered before Olympic.

We were close to destroying Japan's military already. The Bombs did very little to speed war's end or save US soldiers' lives. That's a myth, and their use was unnecessary. It was nothing but a military test case.

What you did was whataboutism deflection. Two things can be bad at once. And when you consider that Japan, China and Korea are closer now than any time in recent history despite that, you should probably think twice before rationalizing mass murder. Hiroshima isn't America's only warcrime afterall

Phil the Philosopher @phibal12.bsky.social

They committed mass murders prior to that horrible ending. Both are bad and part of history as well. It is the consequence of WWII, as the imperial Japan was fighting to the end even after the bombs, imperialists wanting their emperor assassinated for not continuing. www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/S...

Japan had to be stopped, but doing that to so many innocent civilians leaving decades of radiation poisoning is some evil shit. Imperial Japan and Nationalist America are both bad things. Plus for all they knew at the time, it could've ignited the atmosphere

Phil the Philosopher @phibal12.bsky.social

True. That is why, wars are bad especially when based on extremist ideologies. This solution was extreme and horrible to use as both sides were fighting to the bitter end, and today all of it must be dismantled. Atomic power should be only used for other useful means in society.

Shade Aurion @shadeaurion.bsky.social

I disagree. The eagerness to test weapons that could have burned all the oxygen on the planet was stupid and evil. Decades of radiation sickness in children, others reduced to shadows on crumbled walls. Two wrongs don't make a right. Imperial Japan was evil. So is Nationalist America 🤷

aug 6, 2025, 6:31 pm • 0 0 • view

Phil the Philosopher @phibal12.bsky.social

I said atomic power even today is being used in other means, not weapons to kill. Such as in high energy physics and condensed matter physics to battle disease, cancer, reconstruction of damaged DNA, genetic editing and so for food security. That is what I meant for today in a controlled system.

War was going on in the Pacific as many were being killed on both sides. That was the act US took.
