the rest of the screenshots were less riotously colorful. maybe they arrived on a method which works for most of the game, and only the intro is weird?

the colors under the top of the mountain are clearly supposed to be darker and fade into black.

I wonder if it's an Apple-II like weird NTSC CRT hack thing that the emulator clearly had no hope in replicating

Pretty sure this is it, I have an original IBM 5150 and it's not uncommon for software to use CGA color patterns in composite mode to artificially make more colors (I actually wrote software to do this, albeit incorrectly, github.com/ShreksHellra... )
