Yeah I regularly find some of the perspectives/attitudes I hear from folks I know to be incompatible with my own sense of morality, but chalking it up to "country people dumb and immoral" doesn't help formulate an effective counterargument.
I think the issue is that trying to understand evil is a sort of moral abyss that most people do not wish to stare into. And I think we've *tried* different counterarguments. But "effective" ones likely require abandoning our own principles and mores.
