Thus far, the answer to that question has been (to the eternal dishonor of the Armed Services) "no." But who knows. Maybe they care more about fatalities than deliberate "fuck you" deployments, active re-segregation efforts, and the return of blue discharges.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
They keep deliberately structuring NG "deployments" specifically to deny them benefits and protections. This is gonna get bad. The question is whether the FGOs give a fuck if their people suffer.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
That's such an incredibly stupid idea. I struggle to see why anyone would think that's a decent course of action. ... Fuck. The bastards might do it.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
*Everyone* hates committee meetings. Universities aren't special. 30 minutes with your local school board, HOA, or town council will make anyone an anarchist.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not even sure it's possible. This is like trying to apply Huntington's theory of military civil relations go academia. A meh idea on the merits, but one actively counter to current reality.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
We already sort of do this. NYPD trigger pull weight is a meme in some circles.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Also, the crowd of people mad about "bars open schools closed" is far from homogeneous. Most are mad both weren't open. But there's a subset that's mad that both weren't closed (or the order switched) that are used to give cover to the rest.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Real America hungers for Howard Dean.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
It's that old 30 Rock bit. They don't trust us with our urban, queer, cosmopolitan, multicultural, universalist, college-educated, Trader Joes elitism. They could just say "liberalism" but that would require more introspection than they're capable of.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
There are things worth losing for. And more politicians need to understand that.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
"Super Earth" So that's what we're calling it now.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
The issue isn't that they're elitists. It's that they *think* they're liberals, when they aren't.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Do the right thing, and lose reelection.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Seriously, the biggest obstacles here are going to be from municipal atomization.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
This, too, is gender.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
You're basically trying to build the RCMP, but less shit. You're not going to do that overnight. Forced consolidation is probably your best bet. (Only staties). You'll run into issues with sheriffs, though.

Thanks weird 19th century racism!

Underrated police reform is banning their uniforms from looking "cool", "tactical," or threatening. You'll look like Barney Fife, and you'll be happy.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social)
This is the issue when elites think of themselves as liberals when they are not. They go on with this diner safari bullshit but neglect to ask what liberals think. Because they're liberal, so clearly all liberals think like them. It's a sort of intentional blindness.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
This is just incorrect learned behavior from previous shutdowns. And, notably, incredibly stupid.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Also, cops are hourly for some ungodly reason. Yes, you can get decent pay, but it basically involves time fraud and knowing the right people.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
It's basically mandatory hazing, and the value is wholly unclear.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
It's basically "I hate yuppies." And yuppies are basically always queer coded, and *usually* liberal-coded. More broadly "moved cross country to live in the urban core," even when that urban core is rather small, seems to just break people's brains.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
They don't respect REAL Americans. (State school grads who move to cities)
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, ideally we close the various loopholes that allow the Villages to exist as an entity. But I'd settle for this.

Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Bin Laden getting got. The Arab Spring. ISIL. (And subsequent "franchising" elsewhere) The *very much linked* antagonism with Iran. Yes. 9/11 was 24 years ago. But GWOT only "officially" ended 4 years ago.

Anyone check up on Dubya?
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
They want to stand by their racist friend, as dough faces always have. I continue to wonder how these bastards think their diner safaris are important, while at the same time being more distant from normal liberals than fascists.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
They were so successful that they were able to radicalize. But in so doing, they completely lost the ability to actually persuade and do the basic work of elite reproduction.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
I know some transmasc folks who have had weird differential experiences when traveling. (Europe viewing them as more masc, for instance)
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
I should say those *perceived* as femme/masc of center.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Culture is a lot more accepting of those femme of center acting masculine (in very weird and still misogynistically fraught ways) than the reverse.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
IMO, the big thing won't be the Hays Code dying. It'll be the lack of an MPAA to take its place.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent

Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
You need Republicans on board. So, yeah. I'm aware. There's a perfectly good Arizona route (if you bully UP) that the state refuses to run.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
All college towns should have trains to major metro that supply them. (Ideally, you'd run special service for move-in and move-out)
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Why aren't there (daylight) connections to elsewhere in Ohio? (Checks online) Oh, Columbus, the most obvious train destination and source of potential ridership, has no Amtrak service.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd love better polls to back it, but I'm pretty sure race dep *is* happening in the South due to ed-pol. It's just going to take a while because it's on an age gradient. So it'll hit places with growth first. (SC is gonna continue living up to the old James L. Petrigu line)
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh no. Miku is 18 now.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't even think that's a record or anything.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, we got the "Woke" season and a half of the Rookie. There's some juice there. IMO, the bigger issue is that no one under 50 watches scripted broadcast TV anymore.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
You make a show about DoJ Civil Rights Division or NYPD Internal Affairs, and you rip crimes (and results) straight from the headlines. The issue, IMO, is that you'll have no shot at cooperation or LE consultants.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Nah, the big issue with LE is that local LE basically works as if you required everyone to serve a tour as infantry before they could do any other MOS. Up and out is bad. But rotations could help. (Alongside consolidating every police department below the state level)

Easier in military (forced turnover) than law enforcement. And cultural rot is *hard* to kill. Because you need to have the will to do so and sustain it for at least 5 years, preferably a decade.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
True. For all the foibles of the Russian military industrial complex, it can produce its own engines. The Israelis can't. (This is an underrated sanctions venue IMO)

Anyone good enough to overcome the Mad vote is probably not the primary cause of the Mad vote. TBH, I'm most interested in how the coming year impacts "seniority" in the House. It seems like it's on its last legs. If there's CBC turnover, I think it's done.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Well. It might be for Russia, just not for the reasons they're thinking.

Killing leaders also reduces (or rather changes) competencies within any organization. There's a reason that armies have *long* targeted officers. Now, you can do the same for militants. But it has rather... dark outcomes. (Selects for paranoia and usually intransigence)
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
Like, we have this model that if only we kill that one evil dude, things will be better. And that's not really true, because the system and discontent and a multitude of other things that produced them is still there. Tojo was no longer in charge in August 1944. He didn't matter.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
The fundamental reasons are innately tied to *valuing leadership* and I think a lot of the reason for this is a general disconnect between leaders and the people they nominally serve and rule. Though, in the MENA case, a large portion is also devaluing the people they rule.
Wandering Hoo (@wanderlib.bsky.social) reply parent
TBH, I think the interesting thing is actually that it took this long. Like, even now, people question why we didn't just decap-strike Assad. Or do similar to Putin and Lukashenko. The breakdown is most notable in the ME. But it is a lot broader now. I'm not certain of the valence. But it is new.

I think the issue is that trying to understand evil is a sort of moral abyss that most people do not wish to stare into. And I think we've *tried* different counterarguments. But "effective" ones likely require abandoning our own principles and mores.
