Not actually true - pilots would use conventional charts & ground-based Navaids to get to the airport terminal area. Then use ground-based ILS to land the airplane. GPS-aided landing systems have trialed but never got fielded widely due retrofit costs.

Just so you know - pilots are taught to fly using "paper maps" first. Many aircraft carry books of maps for this very reason. They always have an aeronautical map of their route. And a compass is built into the planes.

If pilots ever said using “paper maps”, to keep things simple for non aviators, they meant “old style” charts, visualized on digital screen(s): standardized en-route, approach and departure routes with waypoints and beacons, or onboard geo reference systems (see f.i. Scott’s info I attached above)

Older folks do a cognitive test that includes drawing a clock with hands in position to tell whatever time the instructor has asked for. Many young ppl would fail it today. Should the test change or should kids learn to tell time on a clock? I say the latter - be prepared, just like map-reading.
