Pretending it’s not happening won’t stop it from happening, it just means we’ll have even less time to prepare for the consequences. Just incomprehesible foolishness.

Don’t look up.
Sad to watch the US disintegrate slowly.
So sad!!! Destruction of science continues in the US. 😨
Just ignore the problem and it will go away. #MagicalThinking
Brick by brick Krasnov takes America apart day after day after day..
🤬
Stop testing, it will just 'go away', stop monitoring, the problems will 'disappear', stop logging, so nobody knows where we sent the data, and most of all, stop recording because we sound like the imbeciles we are!
Welcome to Trumpworld. Why, oh why did the Americans elect the rapist lying despicable dipshit AGAIN?
Racism and/or misogyny. He won against 2 women. I voted for the email lady and for Kamala. My household understood the assignment and did the same. Having a Black man in the White House for two terms broke their MAGA brains. I campaigned for Obama in 2008 and 2012.
Damn.
Strong "if we don't test so much for it we won't have so many cases" vibes
I sure hope the People's Republic of China has the capability to track this data for the world.
This is a really big deal for everyone. This has major consequences for our ability to monitor our planet, especially across the polar regions (Antarctic/Greenland surface melt, sea ice data, etc.). There are alternative data sources in some cases, but it will take time to prepare these products.
Meanwhile #Arctic sea-ice extent is currently the lowest on record for today's data. The melt season has only just started, and we need all of the observational data we can get. Not less.
And this affects NOT just sea ice data... bsky.app/profile/pppa...
Wait…so if I’m reading this correctly, this will make sea ice data less precise and will make Space Weather forecasts less accurate? Am I missing anything? Gosh, my heart and stomach have sunk so many times this year it’s now out of my body.
Less precise is putting it lightly; they are directly cutting off multiple data feeds that feed directly into NOAA reports
Multiple feeds that came from DoD data?
Yup, that’s how the initial announcement reads
Correct me if I’m wrong but SSMIS is the only satellite that is a low earth orbiting satellite that monitors space weather and microwave data of the planet in the world minus China? Gosh we really put all our eggs into one basket.
There are some polar orbiting microwave instruments on EUMETSAT platforms. Nevertheless, it is a disaster.
Do they also monitor the cryosphere and heliosphere the same way the DoD did?
There is a good alternative, Japan's AMSR2, however the legacy cost of converting all the models that depended on SSMIS will be a pain in the ass.
No data, so they can claim “no evidence”, just like Trump’s answer to the covid numbers.
They don't want data available that can contradict their belief that climate change doesn't exist.
eng ?????!!!!!!!!
The point of course is to disrupt any meaningful societal process that benefits Americans. That’s the singular mission of kompromats.
Terrible, terrible, terrible.
"I dunno what this is so it must be woke"
Or "I know this collects evidence for climate change, so I want it gone."
I don't know if this is coincidence, but in the latest NSIDC they noted that they're moving to ECMWF's ERA5 reanalysis for temperature and circulation. nsidc.org/sea-ice-toda... I really like ERA5 per se, but it will be concerning if sites start shifting to ERA5 due to declining data from NOAA/NASA.
Page isn’t found…
For some reason it has auto-truncated the link: the right link is nsidc.org/sea-ice-toda...
Gotta feeling the geoscience community is gonna start relying heavily on our European (and also in some instances Japanese) counterparts for Earth monitoring data. This is actually the first day I knew that the DoD played a huge role in cryospheric sciences, always thought it was NASA/NOAA alone.
Yes. I use earth.nullschool.net a lot, and remember how much I freaked out to find a warning on their landing page in early March that the data was unreliable. I wonder if the warning will pop up again? It shook me at the time.
I saw this happen in realtime. I wish I could remember the exact date. It was after the massive gutting in Feb. and then some of the cuts were dialed back a couple of weeks later and this page went away.
If we do have to go to other sources, the European Short and Medium Term forecasts are the gold standard, and sometimes their hurricane predictions are a little better than ours. Hopefully Nullschool will still be able to use other ensemble data and keep this functional. If not? I'm gutted. 💔😢
Same here. I use nullschool a ton as well as many NOAA websites. Losing access to weather, climate, and ocean data will be so heartbreaking.
Fuck every last sweet old meemaw and peepaw across the land who voted for this nightmare because hurrdurr climate change is a woke librul conspiracy. And a triple fuck you to anyone under the age of 50 who voted for this. Just garbage people top to bottom.
agree, but would also add those who could, but did not vote
America has no use for knowledge or data anymore. We’re collectively too deeply stupid.
That's quite a bit of data that will be unavailable
Meh, almost all the Arctic Sea Ice is melted (or soon will melt) anyway.
Yep. An ice-free Arctic - blue ocean event with be disastrous.
What is a possible work around for the next 3 years? It won’t be perfect, but bootstrapping can be rewarding in its own way. Is the data of importance to DoD?
The news is changing by the minute, we just don't have the answers quite yet. Many of my graphics use data from JAXA though, which are unaffected (like my post this morning).
Clearly this is contrary to DOD’s mission. Credit to Elon Musk, DOGE, SoD Hegseth and … “Big Balls” who just left his post and disappeared into the ether. I suspect that the Sec. of the Navy and the Coast Guard might want these data.
