Exactly. Many unhoused people are not mentally ill; many work and are invisible to people like JD. People with mental illness who also have nowhere to live deserve compassion, support, and treatment, not derision and punishment, as this ghoul wishes upon them.

One of the points of shutting down mental institutions was SO THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TO CORRECT THE ABUSES happening in them. People were terrified of being involuntarily committed.

Ronald Reagan shuttered the mental health hospitals. JD knows nothing about history.

The same thing happened in the UK during the Reagan years. Thatcher dumped mentally ill people and addicted people out of hospitals. For most of them, no such care was available. But the hospitals, and the valuable land they occupied were sold. Ever since, we have had a 'homeless problem'.

Imagine how mentally destructive the worst day of your life was then add in the fact you have no one to take you in and have no home to go back to. No way you won't become a bit nutty in that situation.

Most people with mental illness who are unhoused did not develop mental illness because they were homeless; they became homeless because of mental illness. When discharged from a brief hospital stay, many people end up (back) on the streets. Family support disappears or was already gone.

I dont think that's true. Trying to survive on the street will destroy your grip on reality and your faith in other people. If you can't sleep, you will lose your mind very quickly

I don’t deny that at all. But people with, for instance, schizophrenia did not develop a serious mental illness because of living on the streets. Mental illness is certainly exacerbated by living on the streets, being unable to get treatment or other support. I agree with that 100%.

I also agree that being without stable housing, access to food, and community can make a person lose their grip on reality quickly; absolutely. But the cycle between being hospitalized for serious mental illness, being discharged without support, and living on the streets is a crucial issue.

And, it's cheaper to give them housing and support services, but no, the evangelical so-called Christians want to punish them.

A big part of American Christianity is making sure you are properly shamed & punished for, often times, things that are/were beyond your control before they feel like they can give you money, resources, respect, human decency, etc

A big part of it is also making you scared of what punishment will befall you if you do something wrong. Then they can't understand why they can't get the same spontaneity and performance out of you that they get out of a little sociopath. What's wrong with *you*?

Historically, the same was true of a lot of institutionalized people. Asylums were/are first and foremost a way to remove undesirable people from society. projectlets.org/blog/asylums Our society doesn't need mental hospitals, it needs more housing.
