The idea that you should be able to rake in money experimenting on everybody’s teenagers, vulnerable friends, struggling siblings, lonely parents and every other lost soul in the world simply by arguing for your own inevitability and potential is abhorrent to me.
The last thing anyone needs is to be egged on. When I was that age I was not doing well, spiraling mentally, felt like no one noticed. Last thing I needed was an experimental program that could tell me how to kill myself and I would treat like a friend. I find it unethical and criminal.
If your bot cannot look at a conversation about a noose and recognize it as a conversation about suicide, or if your bot can’t “analyze” that exchange and identify its own dangerous encouragement to self-harm, it’s not as “smart” as my goddamn rice cooker, which knows when the rice is cooked.
“We’re working on it.” That’s fine. Pull it, keep working, and when it’s not going to kill anyone’s child when used exactly as designed, you can bring it back. Until then, you are liable for the damage you do, just like somebody who’s still working on their driving and drives into a house.
Who are the A.I. thought leaders who are working specifically to curtail its use? Do they exist? Is there someone out there with the tech expertise to build this stuff who’s saying, this is a huge mistake?
I mean it’s not smart at all but they’re selling it as if it is. Their entire business depends on you believing that so… yeah, I love this for them.
