Spied this Belted Kingfisher watching over the river. #birds #nature #wildlifephotogrpahy #PhotographersUnited

A Belted Kingfisher perched on a dead branch against an out of focus background of green leaves. The bird has a purple-blue head and back, with spiky head and neck feathers. It's upper breast is dark brown. Below, the sides of the breast are lighter brown with white in center, with a light brown band horizontally bisecting the white.

Such interesting-looking birds. I sure haven't seen very many; lucky you!

I see them a lot along the rivers, but usually just flying away. I almost never get close to them perched.

Niiiiiice. These refuse to get remotely close to me this year! Saw one diving on Sunday, but every time I got nearly within reach – it bolted.

This is the first time I’ve been able to get close to one in decent light. I popped down on the bank from behind some trees and it was just downriver from me. It stayed there just long enough to get a couple of shots.
