you can probably block all users of a PDS somehow, but it really sucks when fedi instance admins block other instances with people you wanted to follow. basically breaking up access to communicate in the already significantly smaller network.

It’s way easier for your instance to freeze up and crash compared to your PDS. My PDS runs on a small VPS, and no issues. Since unlike the Fediverse, the relays are picking up my events so I don’t have a shit ton of traffic to my VPS.

yes, it does suck when your admins decide to block stuff like all of Mississippi or Palestinians, or Turkish opposition figures etc. Luckily there's the ability to choose who you let your admin be at least in some systems.

Bluesky public benefit corporation is required to follow the law, so their client follows the law. There are alternative clients which do not follow the law. “admins” do not exist in this sense. But the point is that neither atproto or fediverse are above the law or particularly resistant to it.

theoretically, sure, but you are not explaining how that authority actually works, or how it has anything to do with the admin warfare on fediverse, which seems like a different issue altogether. Because bluesky PBC is not actually stopping you from accessing the atproto network from Mississippi.

you do realize that them putting the IP block in place does take access away and require action for a large number of people, practically speaking every single person that currently lives in that state. That's because Bluesky is almost entirely run by them in practice despite ATProto handwaving.

I hope nobody tips the Mississippi authorities off that there is no real block in place. I do think you're underestimating how much of a disruption it is when practically speaking none of those people know about that and we can' t easily tell them because they're blocked.
