But society as a whole seems broadly incapable of handling this lack of purpose. The evangelicals backing Trump seem as godless as anyone, but I do wonder if in place of many of the meanings of old, people have turned to the elder gods—that is, to their fears and prejudices.
Anyway, it’s an idea I’ve been toying with and still can’t quite articulate correctly. TLDR I think cosmic horror builds on a sense of “what will we become in the modern godless world” and for a time that question seemed meh. But I increasingly think it’s an important question.
Note to the one person who gets to the end of this: I think this is easily misinterpreted as opposition to atheism or something along those lines. It’s not that. Don’t dig in too deeply, I’m struggling to articulate and unwedded to these ideas anyway.
