Tom Whittington ๐บ๐ฆ๐น๐ผ ๐จ๐ฆ๐ค๐บ๐ธ (@tomwwhittington.bsky.social) reply parent
In practice, I mean its appropriate to appoint someone of the same party who is not likely to be a major influence on the special election. Ideally theyโre also capable so former senator is an ideal fit Ted Kennedy->Paul Kirk->Scott Brown is the model (not endorsing the outcome; Scott Brown sucks)
Tom Whittington ๐บ๐ฆ๐น๐ผ ๐จ๐ฆ๐ค๐บ๐ธ (@tomwwhittington.bsky.social) reply parent
Weโre into edge cases here, but Iโd also exempt appointment replacementsโoften when a senator dies, it makes sense to put in an elder statesman type to fill the role until primary voters get their say. In fact I think itโs ideal for the appointee to not run for maximal democratic legitimacy.

Anyway, itโs an idea Iโve been toying with and still canโt quite articulate correctly. TLDR I think cosmic horror builds on a sense of โwhat will we become in the modern godless worldโ and for a time that question seemed meh. But I increasingly think itโs an important question.
Tom Whittington ๐บ๐ฆ๐น๐ผ ๐จ๐ฆ๐ค๐บ๐ธ (@tomwwhittington.bsky.social) reply parent
But society as a whole seems broadly incapable of handling this lack of purpose. The evangelicals backing Trump seem as godless as anyone, but I do wonder if in place of many of the meanings of old, people have turned to the elder godsโthat is, to their fears and prejudices.

At some point, I figure it must have seemed that we safely managed collapsing belief in Godโcertainly many atheists are perfectly as ethical as theistsโbut an idea I toy with from time to time is that in fact this was prescient. Society has not yet learned to deal with the Nietzschean death of god
