Problem is, there's always a tiny chance they'll text me to complete the purchase process and I'm screwed if I don't get the text. This is a concert I didn't want to blow off.
They usually do that on account setup, imho, because if someone typos a phone # during a transaction, same risk. So if they're going to use it, they usually have to check BEFORE the transaction completes.
