i will remark again on this hallmark of maga politics, which is that trump embodies the organic will of the voters and this imbues him with sovereign power that cannot be checked or limited by any other institution in the society.

in the american system, the president may represent a national electorate but this does not imbue him with anything other than rhetorical power. he must still negotiate with congress, which represents particular constituencies, and heed the courts, who determine what the law is.

But if congress folds like a cheap suit and the courts try to cut the baby in half then his power can be much more than rhetorical. All of the levers of government reside in the hands of the executive who has the will to but grab them.

Umberto Eco's 14 points of fascism called it once again

Ur-Fascism is based upon a selective populism, a qualitative populism, one might say. In a democracy, the citizens have individual rights, but the citizens in their entirety have a political impact only from a quantitative point of view — one follows the decisions of the majority. For Ur-Fascism, however, individuals as individuals have no rights, and the People is conceived as a quality, a monolithic entity expressing the Common Will. Since no large quantity of human beings can have a common will, the Leader pretends to be their interpreter. Having lost their power of delegation, citizens do not act; they are only called on to play the role of the People. Thus the People is only a theatrical fiction. To have a good instance of qualitative populism we no longer need the Piazza Venezia in Rome or the Nuremberg Stadium. There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People. Because of its qualitative populism Ur-Fascism must be against “rotten” parliamentary governments. One of the first sentences uttered by Mussolini in the Italian parliament was “I could have transformed this deaf and gloomy place into a bivouac for my maniples” — “maniples” being a subdivision of the traditional Roman legion. As a matter of fact, he immediately found better housing for his maniples, but a little later he liquidated the parliament. Wherever a politician casts doubt on the legitimacy of a parliament because it no longer represents the Voice of the People, we can smell Ur-Fascism.

These are extremists, whose voices sound louder online and on right-wing media, which gives a false sense that everyone feels that way. That's not true, based on the millions of people demonstrating around the country and the polls that strongly oppose this line of thinking. They are the minority.

The Logic of Populism Populism, I suggest, is a particular moralis tic imagination of politics, a way of perceiving the political world that sets a morally pure and fully unified-but, I shall argue, ultimately fictional-people against elites who are deemed corrupt or in some other way morally inferior.? It is a necessary but not a sufficient condition to be critical of elites in order to qualify as a populist. Otherwise, anyone criticizing the powerful and the status quo in any country would by definition be a populist. In addition to being antielitist, populists are always anti-pluralist: populists claim that they, and only they, represent the people. Other political competitors are just part of the im- moral, corrupt elite, or so populists say, while not having power themselves; when in government, they will not recognize anything like a legitimate opposition. The populist core claim also implies that whoever does not really support populist parties might not be part of the proper people to begin with. In the words of the French philosopher Claude Lefort, the supposedly real people first has to be
