imagine watching a small child struggle to breathe because of a measles infection and then going on your radio show to explain that the “human body was designed to fight measles” with the clear implication that if you die your body just wasn’t good enough.

I write family histories and one death certificate from about 1905 stayed with me: age 3, sick for 2 weeks, then 10 hours of convulsions, then death. Whooping cough. Now there's a vaccine. Who is OK with a 3-year-old kid enduring 10 hours of convulsions before dying?

My parents are buried in a graveyard from the 1700s*. Way too many children under 5, groups of kids all dying at once, sometimes with the parents. Trump's industrial buddies are also getting rid of clean water rules. * So is a college friend who was murdered hitchhiking home from her music lesson.

This is almost exactly the opposite of reality, because measles (possibly uniquely?) can just nuke your immune system so you're not only not "designed" to fight it, if you get it and live you won't be able to fight anything else either

If you don't have it yet, please do, if you think you've just been exposed and can get at least one dose of a vaccine within a week, it may still be worthwhile to do so. But for the symptomatic, 1. In classic cases, you will already have acquired immunity, 2. Measles can inflict immune amnesia

Cara-me-away @carameske.bsky.social

If immune amnesia has happened, then you will likely be susceptible again to illnesses you previously had immunity, raising the question of whether vaccination is still effective for someone experiencing this, as measles can kill adaptive immune cells.

In the 60’s a lot of us had measles & it wasn’t as horrible as the article describes. It wasn’t a picnic, but this is almost a different disease than what we chatted about in 4th grade

Key info: Strength is a reductive term. All biological processes operate as a set of locks and keys - viruses enter your cells by having a key that seems to fit one of your locks. Ergo, immune cells learn what locks and keys viruses have and create compatible keys/locks for them to stop infection.

avatar
Cara-me-away @carameske.bsky.social

By vaccinating, you tell your body what those keys/locks look like without risking an actual infection. Some viruses change often, like flu and COVID, while others either do but are virtually eliminated, or don't update particularly quickly. If we don't vaccinate at all, we risk virus changes.

I don't know what this means for the future of measles, given our reaction to COVID and the ease of international travel, I am currently under the impression that we may soon have a global measles pandemic on our hands, as measles is a RNA virus and therefore more prone to mutation.

Adults with heath care coverage that test for immune response from previous vaccine-do it. The current MMR recommendation is 2 doses, but for Gen X + millennials, it may have only been 1 dose as kids. On a hunch I requested a test and my immune protection was borderline. Got booster immediately.

That's probably an economic thing too. If the town is poor enough, there might not be enough money for them to keep a licensed professional in business, so they're working with what they have. Another case would be using a pastor as a psychologist when you can't afford professional help.

And FWIW, I'm a Christian and I have a lot of respect for a good pastor, but one thing a good pastor knows is not to wade into situations that are beyond their training. But in poor communities, professionals may not be available. So you make due with whoever's around, and fools rush in...

I don’t dispute your comment; it’s all true. But it does beg the question: why, in the wealthiest country on earth, are we unable to provide small towns with qualified healthcare pros? jun 23, 2025, 3:03 pm • 1 0 • view

Tomás Arís @littlebridgetroll.bsky.social

Short answer? Capitalism. It's a lot of supply and demand and markets of scale. You need patients who can pay for services to fund medical care. Lacking a critical number of patients who can pay their own way, you need some kind of system of subsidy to pay medical practitioners to stick around.

jun 23, 2025, 5:25 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Tomás Arís @littlebridgetroll.bsky.social

And you answered your own question. It's priorities. And I think even having the resources to study the problem is *itself* a problem. People don't invest as much in studying small towns, and each one is its own case. @gracehill.bsky.social , pardon the token tag, but feels like your question...

What I thought was really interesting is that the crooked, grifting doctor offered something important to people: extended appointments, I.e. time with a human being.

And subtly, there's something else here. "I feel like I've been lied to." Being lied is something you should work about by *logic*. I *know* I've been lied to because I understand logic and fact. This ephemeral dependence on "feelings" is one thing that is extremely messed up in our culture.

And so did the freak parents who didn’t vaccinate their children and let 6 year old child in pig tails die. But let’s make more children! Anyone can do it-No regulations.Kill them with your creepy religion and be prison free. Cunts. should be in prison and the surviving children taken.

I didn't read this paywalled article but when one of these children died in TX, the parents had no regrets or hindsight and STILL believed that vaccinating would have been more dangerous than her DYING from infection!

Oh, I thought he was doing more than that. He said he was seeing people with broken ribs and, colds and stuff. That he "helped" those he could and sent the others to the hospital. But you're right. Maybe he just prayed over them and sent them on. He was totally anti-vax though.
