yeah they are going to decide this and give republican states enough time to draw new maps
yeah they are going to decide this and give republican states enough time to draw new maps
MAKE NOISE PEOPLE
This was the plan all along. Redistricting for more easy GOP seats while undoing the Voters Right Act.
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
I hate it here.
It's not gonna get any better for a loooooong time, get out now if you can lol
@jamellebouie.net I get that the 14th amendment is theoretically conceived of as “colorblind”, but wouldn’t an originalist reading of its Section 2 provision — essentially superseding the 3/5 compromise — indicate that its purpose is to ensure proportional representation for minority groups?
The founders (for all their imperfections) definitely didn’t think that all three of the branches of government would be so aligned, and the Judicial and Legislative branches would cede all of their power to the executive like this.
Das ist ein klassischer Schachzug der Republikaner - Redistricting als Waffe gegen Demokratie. Aber wie lange wird es dauern, bis die Menschen durchschauen, dass sie nur ihre eigenen Interessen verteidigen?
They're going to try but all the flailing disorganization and haste makes me think they desperately fear losing, even believe it's likely
Oh same. The flop sweat is pretty obvious. And it just feels like they’d have to run the table and have everything go perfectly to actually net enough seats to make it close! I just don’t see it. (I hope I’m not wrong!)
I can’t say I’m in the bot that thinks they’re that much of an underdog. But I can agree on the flip sweat. This reeks of desperation & panic ten fold
I just keep looking at 2018, the first Trump midterm. Dems netted forty-odd seats! And it just feels like the public is gonna be WAY more disgusted this time.
(National vote was about D+9 btw. Kinda feels like we can top that!)
I desperately want to believe we can do it again. we have to. And we need to get the senate too
Oh it’s a tough one. But if we’re imagining a historic landslide we may as well imagine the whole thing, right? People even more gung-ho than me were telling me it was totally possible yesterday. Hope they’re right!
much agreed
The SCOTUS is his. He bought them and they know what they have to do 🔥🤡

People need to go bro these judges homes
Wonder what we will call this nation after the war 🤔
It’ll be funny when they do this and still lose the house
That's the kind of talk we need!
I think they’re underestimating how unpopular their actions have been
I fricken hope so.
I don't think there's any amount of redistricting that will save them the house. But unfortunately I don't think Dems taking the house is going to actually change anything either lol
They'd definitely be running the risk of a dummymander. It's *probably* unlikely but if we slide into a recession with Trump already in the 30s and who knows what happens with the Epstein files over the next ~15 months...
I will never forgive people who stayed home in 2016 because they didn’t believe Trump would win. We have lost our democracy based on their laziness.
Are we just fucked? I feel like we have no recourse.
It's funny how a group of people who can't be fired and insist that they can self report their outside earnings and gifts as they choose make decisions that literally any other person in the United States cannot.
They would have done this regardless but now they are like Trump—to conceal their shameful corruption they need a brutal dictatorship
Expanding the court would have been a mistake though, amirite?
The conservatives have already decided, of course. They just need to know what nonsense reasoning they have to make up
Gosh
Blue states need to go bananas rigging their maps
Which is why Democrats should not wait to see what the fascist Republican party will do and make their own moves NOW.
they need to fundraise for a while first
Terrifying prospect, this.
Calling balls and strikes but widen the strike zone to include hitting the batter
supreme court is going to do everything it can to keep the house in republican hands
Yuuuuuup.
So that House Republicans can continue underfund the courts and John Roberts meds to make annual appeals that judges need raises from now until he retires? It is all crooked. only some of it will spectacular fail for them.
At a certain point, enough people are go to stop listening to them, and then their hold on power will end. That day is coming closer and closer each day, especially with the actions states are taking now. www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-...
Yes, this is why they were selected.
Why can’t blue states just do the same and draw maps that cancel these out?
bc: 1) many have written into their constitutions (foolishly!) that they cannot without certain requirements / votes / etc. and 2) standard centrist dems refusing to do what's needed.
What about Newsom in California? He’s selfish enough to do whatever it takes to get on the dem’s 2028 ticket. Also big enough to cancel out Texas. Does their state constitution prohibit it?
dont have the full article...but this was the gist. regardless, someone needs to step up and smash something through
i read an article that said california COULD do it, but it would take some wrangling and a vote that would need to go to the people...but that it is much more likely than NYC and a few others at this point
Yes, needs to get on the ballot in Nov but the legislature is in support and Dems have supermajority. Legislature needs to pass by Aug 22 to get on the Nov ballot. Stay tuned.
Let’s get that shit on the ballot already!!
Six "Justices" are overdue for dancing the Hemp Fandango then being composted and spread across a bean field. Let's start with miscegenist Justice Three-Fifths. 😉
Any Democrat content to have SCOTUS' thumb on the scale for decades to come is not serious about any policy goals.
Justice Jackson write the slowest dissent of all time challenge.
Given what Alito has done in recent sessions, this is not even a radical suggestion
I am begging Jackson to this. One word a day. Keep asking questions on the bench.
Roberts, Thomas, and Alito have abandoned their principles to support a totalitarian government. Shame, shame, shame.
(I don't mention Kavanaugh and Barrett only because I suspect they never had any principles.)
SUPPORT TEXAS DEMS! Marc Elias of Democracy Docket interviewed Texas Dem, Trey Martinez-Fischer & they recommended this site. Tell your friends! www.onetexas.org
We’re gonna need a bigger suite of constitutional amendments
no surprise
Serious question here: How does a person look at this news and not just get incredibly discouraged? Like what is something we can actually do to prevent it from happening?
Of course! They're in on the fascist takeover! Alito said it to @laurenwindsor.bsky.social in an uncovered video.
I don't want to have to build a new country from scratch, but it's looking more and more like that might be what we have to do.
‘Been thinking about that a lot myself. What keeps me awake at night: -How do we survive this? -If/when they burn everything down, how do we create a democratic system with better protections from anti-democratic institutions?
Just as the GOP does anything and everything to disenfranchise black voters, Roberts will hold that the nation has evolved to the point in which there is no longer evidence of discrimination... in the eyes of a reasonable prudent deaf, dumb and blind white racist.
I don’t think it’ll be enough but they’re going to try!
Is robbing people of representation such a good idea? I seem to recall a 1776 rallying cry on this very topic.
This is why I am tired with the finger wagging and scolding about Trump “not allowing elections.” No one is saying they will cancel elections. That is not their plan. Their plan is a “disputed” election with disputed electors that will be resolved by the House and SCOTUS. This is their plan.
Their plan is to have elections with voters they select. They're following the Putin manual.
It’s so fucking obvious.
Yep
There may be enough pissed off Republicans that they don't vote at all or cross over.
…permanently
OFF WITH THEIR HANDS!!
The MAGA SCOTUS majority fears impeachment if the GOP loses the House. The midterms are an existential threat to them, SOTH Johnson, and Trump and his backers and minions. They will lie, cheat, and abuse their power to hold onto power and stay out of prison.
So, where is the SCOTUS pledge for every Democrat to sign? The one obligating the next Congress to radically reform the Court? Don’t complain that voters despise the Do-Nothing Party when it keeps doing nothing.
We've needed a massive protest against the Supreme Court for a LONG time. Why hasn't this happened? Egregious decisions are plentiful. Roe v Wade, Citizens United, Voting rights come to mind. I know it won't "do" anything, but I've heard well-meaning people say what Trump is doing is "legal,"...
Why are we giving this illegitimate court power? MAGA wouldn't.
Gonna be crazy seeing SCOTUS deny Dem states the ability to redraw any maps, even as Repub states that outright state it's politically motivated to redraw their own, likely on the shadow docket so there's no need to explain anything.
As a lawyer, it’s unclear to me why lawyers would show up to the Red Court at all. Cus it’s not a court now.
Traitors in action.
Ugh. Look at Clarence -
Sounds bad
They’re always in a rush when they get a chance to strip us of another right.
😪
republicans states will be allowed but blue states will require an act of congress because major changes.
SCOTUS is a criminal organization
We MUST make a concerted effort to wreck the Court's reputation as an impartial arbiter. Always refer to them as partisan, corrupt, bought, bribable, tainted, illegitimate, biased, unethical, shady, unscrupulous, and crooked. Keep noting that three are sexual predators and three are GOP operatives.
Remember when they couldn't possibly move faster on the presidential immunity issue, leading to him not being brought to trial before being re-elected?
They can move fast when they want to.
I feel like there's a term for a one-party government, but I can't remember what it is.
Why are the dissenting judges not writing articles? Giving speeches. Explaining all this dangerous undemocratic gutting of longstanding democratic principles?
Occam’s razor: the simplest answer is correct. Trump’s razor: the stupidest reason is the actual reason. Roberts’s razor: the Republican result is the inevitable result.
Honestly, do we get rise of a corrupt court and prevent it from happening again?
what they would be shooting for if maximally hacky is time for a few red states to get new maps through but not enough time for blue states to do it
am concerned that this is the plan. I've heard encouraging noises from Newsom and Hochul, but really hoping they have something ready to go..
Some kind of cockamamie ruling where new maps are justified but only for states previously subject to VRA restrictions
Would laugh my ass off seeing that as it's little-known that New York is actually one of those states too, so if this were the nuclear option they went with I bet we could draw NY maps to elect zero Republicans. Every district in the state technically passes through NYC now. Sorry.
New York does not need anything Republican.
I just posted about this, but yeah, that is clearly what they're going for. And they also know that blue states have shit the bed on this exact matter because they built in LOTS of failsafes that'll let the GOP sue to slow them down—barriers that don't exist in red states.
I have a college friend in our UT Signal chat that's a Senate committee staffer who's been telling us about aaaaall the scenarios they've been projecting in all the various blue states in accordance with their respective state laws, and holy shit, it's baaaaaad.
his tl;dr version is that there are maybe just two or three blue states where Democrats will have the capacity to respond tit-for-tat in a timely manner, and that's simply not enough. if SCOTUS nukes Section 2, we are potentially looking at a several year gap in our ability to respond accordingly.
Yea I mean, if dems get like 60% of the vote (assuming a wave) and only manage to sustain a slim minority, we gotta be pretty close to succession right? Not hoping for it but those are Jim Crow south numbers.
We’re still too comfortable. There will be grumbling but people can still get burrito taxis. Revolution means losing your job basically
I’d have a lot more time for revolutioning
Appropriate post/pfp combo
Kasuga has many jobs
And yet I don’t know if we can call him employed in the traditional sense. Plus I’d argue hitting a Release Suplex on the president so he has to go back into his wheelchair is more important in these times.
the Republicans can, worst-case, get about 11 seats out of a redistricting cycle.
Well that’s somewhat comforting
the Republicans control precisely the same states which redistricted in 2020. none of those states have any bars on gerrymandering.
and section 2 repeal creates a higher ceiling for gerrymanders but doing anything with it requires you abandon vote sinks
Hence the potential for dummymanders then I presume ?
Like, no kidding in that scenario, other countries should stop doing business with us and we will need to stop calling ourselves a democracy.
"I hate the 2 party system!" *Monkey's paw closes finger*
Ds need to go whole hog on this. Increase D districts & obliterate all R districts
Attn @governor.ca.gov Launch ballot initiative NOW— 🥊, don’t 🗣️ And for the love of all that’s holy, shoot for MAX # (none of this ‘5 for 5’ horseshit); CA holds the royal flush… we’ll need ALL those cards once Rs run their table. You’re a big thinker among Ds. Just think big ENOUGH
It’s remarkable how fast they can move when they damn well feel like it.
Sounds like taxation without representation to me
👍🏼 🎯
Maybe one or more of the 3 women liberals will need to take a lot of time to write a dissent, slowing up the release of the decision.
we have had our last-ever real election and the Dems blew it on genocide and bipartisanship.
My thoughts EXACTLY! We are going to have to have 2nd Civil War…
lol none of these people elected care enough
Utterly braindead take
If your take on 2024 with everything we have seen since was "Dems lost a layup" rather than "Harris ran a competitive campaign in an incredibly hostile environment and could not overcome the headwinds" then you should, frankly speaking, never talk about politics again online
One of the worst things I've ever seen. Nonstop "securing the border" word salad when we needed a full-throated defense of immigration. "The most lethal military" when folks are sick of war. Parading with Liz Cheney instead of demonizing the GOP. Muzzling Walz in the Vance debate. And the genocide.
Even if those are not the main reasons she lost, they certainly didn’t help. I can’t understand why people think it’s a sin to recognize that. Her campaign didn’t offer a compelling alternative to well… anything. It’s not surprising that people weren’t inspired to turn out!
Perhaps she needed to do more to "earn" your vote. I thought she was a compelling alternative to Trump. Being a normal dem is compelling enough to me but perhaps I'm a cheap date.
"They certainly didn't help" - you actually do not know this! You have zero way of knowing if this is true. You do not *think* they helped, but without a way to look into a different universe where she campaigned in a different way, there is no way to actually make this a falsifiable claim
If you look at NJ, where educated, diverse north NJ (in NYC media market, so no campaigning) swung further right than white working-class Springsteen Country in south NJ (Philly media market, got lots of campaigning by proxy), I do not think you can actually say her campaign was ineffective!
The places that saw the most of Harris (and Cheney) had less of a swing to the right than the places that didn't. I do not know what else you can conclude other than her campaign was decent at moving the dial but the anti-incumbency environment was simply too much to overcome
She got 5% of the GOP vote. (Biden had gotten 6%.) The strategy was a failure. Meanwhile 7 million Dems who voted in 2020 stayed home.
You actually do not have a substantiative rebuttal to the fact that the places that got Harris' message the most turned rightward the least, which is completely incongruous with your theory that her campaign was turning voters off I'd say "and you know this" but I do not think you're that smart
The "swing right" in NJ and elsewhere was good Dems staying home because they couldn't stomach her "secure border" crap and obstinate support for Israel's war crimes. She had no agenda other than vaguely to continue the path Biden (<40% job approval).
So why did the places where she talked about her "secure border" crap and "no agenda" swing right less hard than the places where she didn't
She didn’t offer a compelling alternative to what is happening now? lol Also, “full throated defense of immigration” ignores that the public by and large doesn’t like immigration regardless of its positive merits.
That's a huge error. Political leaders can influence attitudes on immigration and other issues. Pro-immigration voters had no good choice. But Harris had nothing to gain by promising a border crackdown because no hater who wants cruelty will ever believe Dems will deliver that as well as Trump.
It wasn't a "layup." Biden failing all his meaningful economic promises—CTC, minimum wage, paid family leave, expanded Medicare—caused the headwinds. But the most basic Dem message on earth is "these Republicans are awful, let's beat them." Instead it was "Republicans are great—except Trump!"
Why did literally every incumbent party in the developed world face those same headwinds then, if it was Biden who caused them
I understand the incumbency phenomenon that occurred across the world in 2024. Yeah, that was hard to overcome, and our election was actually much closer than many of those. However, I believe with an actual tangible message/agenda they could have closed the gap even more, enough to have won.
They had a message and agenda. They had tons of policy, much of it very progressive. That people don't know about it may be a fault of the Harris campaign but it's more a fault of the media
I understand she had a ton of pretty great policies. However, a lot of them sound like this. And most people are fickle and don’t care about stuff like this. “Free buses” and “Freeze the Rent” connect with more people because they’re simple.
But my point is, you *believe* this. You do not know this. Maybe a Harris that goes further to the left loses by more! None of us know this for sure, it's all just guesswork. But the available evidence from voting patterns etc suggests the story of 2024 was "decent campaign vs impossible headwinds"
like the Dems actually did pretty good for an incumbent party in a developed nation in 2024 which was the first time on record that literally every single one of them lost voteshare from the prior election Going "durrrr Biden didn't get minimum wage raised" is such baby-brain level analysis
Yeah you should probably stop talking instead of embarrassing yourself further "Folks are sick of war"? We're not *at* war. Biden's tenure was the least that US forces have been involved in fighting overseas in 20 years. Walz was never "muzzled."
Who was "we'll have the most lethal military!" for? And yes, Walz went from talking about how weird Vance was (during his VP audition) to saying "my friend JD and I could work things out if not for Trump." Didn't call him out on "childless cat ladies" or "eating the dogs and cats" in the debate.
Do you think militaries are meant to not be lethal Walz was calling Vance and the GOP "weird" the week of the election. He was, by his own admission, a poor debater, and the debate showed that. He has never been a good debater.
Again, I am advising you to stop talking because every successive post of yours is clueless at best and it is embarrassing by proxy
It’s this.
Our SCOTUS has been bought. How do we address this?! I’ve called Reps & Senators (luckily for me I have two are actually trying to do something!). What else can we do?! Lawyers, where are you & can you give us any suggestions?!
sabotaging the country to salvage white demographic predominance
