@jamellebouie.net I get that the 14th amendment is theoretically conceived of as “colorblind”, but wouldn’t an originalist reading of its Section 2 provision — essentially superseding the 3/5 compromise — indicate that its purpose is to ensure proportional representation for minority groups?

If your take on 2024 with everything we have seen since was "Dems lost a layup" rather than "Harris ran a competitive campaign in an incredibly hostile environment and could not overcome the headwinds" then you should, frankly speaking, never talk about politics again online

Peter Feld 🍉 @peterfeld.bsky.social

One of the worst things I've ever seen. Nonstop "securing the border" word salad when we needed a full-throated defense of immigration. "The most lethal military" when folks are sick of war. Parading with Liz Cheney instead of demonizing the GOP. Muzzling Walz in the Vance debate. And the genocide.

Even if those are not the main reasons she lost, they certainly didn’t help. I can’t understand why people think it’s a sin to recognize that. Her campaign didn’t offer a compelling alternative to well… anything. It’s not surprising that people weren’t inspired to turn out!

JarekFA @jarekfa.bsky.social

Perhaps she needed to do more to "earn" your vote. I thought she was a compelling alternative to Trump. Being a normal dem is compelling enough to me but perhaps I'm a cheap date.

Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

"They certainly didn't help" - you actually do not know this! You have zero way of knowing if this is true. You do not *think* they helped, but without a way to look into a different universe where she campaigned in a different way, there is no way to actually make this a falsifiable claim

aug 12, 2025, 10:18 pm • 3 0 • view

Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

If you look at NJ, where educated, diverse north NJ (in NYC media market, so no campaigning) swung further right than white working-class Springsteen Country in south NJ (Philly media market, got lots of campaigning by proxy), I do not think you can actually say her campaign was ineffective!

aug 12, 2025, 10:19 pm • 4 0 • view
avatar
Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

The places that saw the most of Harris (and Cheney) had less of a swing to the right than the places that didn't. I do not know what else you can conclude other than her campaign was decent at moving the dial but the anti-incumbency environment was simply too much to overcome

aug 12, 2025, 10:20 pm • 3 0 • view

Peter Feld 🍉 @peterfeld.bsky.social

She got 5% of the GOP vote. (Biden had gotten 6%.) The strategy was a failure. Meanwhile 7 million Dems who voted in 2020 stayed home.

Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

You actually do not have a substantiative rebuttal to the fact that the places that got Harris' message the most turned rightward the least, which is completely incongruous with your theory that her campaign was turning voters off I'd say "and you know this" but I do not think you're that smart

aug 12, 2025, 10:35 pm • 3 0 • view
avatar
Peter Feld 🍉 @peterfeld.bsky.social

The "swing right" in NJ and elsewhere was good Dems staying home because they couldn't stomach her "secure border" crap and obstinate support for Israel's war crimes. She had no agenda other than vaguely to continue the path Biden (<40% job approval).

aug 12, 2025, 10:29 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

So why did the places where she talked about her "secure border" crap and "no agenda" swing right less hard than the places where she didn't

aug 12, 2025, 10:32 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
James @toner56.bsky.social

She didn’t offer a compelling alternative to what is happening now? lol Also, “full throated defense of immigration” ignores that the public by and large doesn’t like immigration regardless of its positive merits.

aug 12, 2025, 11:23 pm • 3 0 • view
avatar
Peter Feld 🍉 @peterfeld.bsky.social

That's a huge error. Political leaders can influence attitudes on immigration and other issues. Pro-immigration voters had no good choice. But Harris had nothing to gain by promising a border crackdown because no hater who wants cruelty will ever believe Dems will deliver that as well as Trump.

aug 13, 2025, 12:12 am • 3 0 • view
avatar
Peter Feld 🍉 @peterfeld.bsky.social

It wasn't a "layup." Biden failing all his meaningful economic promises—CTC, minimum wage, paid family leave, expanded Medicare—caused the headwinds. But the most basic Dem message on earth is "these Republicans are awful, let's beat them." Instead it was "Republicans are great—except Trump!"

aug 12, 2025, 10:21 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

Why did literally every incumbent party in the developed world face those same headwinds then, if it was Biden who caused them

aug 12, 2025, 10:22 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Brendan Davey @brendandavey.bsky.social

I understand the incumbency phenomenon that occurred across the world in 2024. Yeah, that was hard to overcome, and our election was actually much closer than many of those. However, I believe with an actual tangible message/agenda they could have closed the gap even more, enough to have won.

aug 12, 2025, 10:29 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

They had a message and agenda. They had tons of policy, much of it very progressive. That people don't know about it may be a fault of the Harris campaign but it's more a fault of the media

aug 12, 2025, 10:32 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
Brendan Davey @brendandavey.bsky.social

I understand she had a ton of pretty great policies. However, a lot of them sound like this. And most people are fickle and don’t care about stuff like this. “Free buses” and “Freeze the Rent” connect with more people because they’re simple.

Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

But my point is, you *believe* this. You do not know this. Maybe a Harris that goes further to the left loses by more! None of us know this for sure, it's all just guesswork. But the available evidence from voting patterns etc suggests the story of 2024 was "decent campaign vs impossible headwinds"

aug 12, 2025, 10:34 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Astreia @redoubters.bsky.social

like the Dems actually did pretty good for an incumbent party in a developed nation in 2024 which was the first time on record that literally every single one of them lost voteshare from the prior election Going "durrrr Biden didn't get minimum wage raised" is such baby-brain level analysis

Yeah you should probably stop talking instead of embarrassing yourself further "Folks are sick of war"? We're not *at* war. Biden's tenure was the least that US forces have been involved in fighting overseas in 20 years. Walz was never "muzzled."

Who was "we'll have the most lethal military!" for? And yes, Walz went from talking about how weird Vance was (during his VP audition) to saying "my friend JD and I could work things out if not for Trump." Didn't call him out on "childless cat ladies" or "eating the dogs and cats" in the debate.
