There are few things that make me feel more like a societal outcast then when a new movie comes out and everyone is talking about it and everyone’s insisting it’s a must see in theaters and not one of those people will wear a mask to the movies so I can go too.

Coworker: “Have you seen Sinners yet? It’s so good!” Me: “😷 … no.”

I've got to the point where I dread people telling me about films, gigs, conferences, pretty much any social stuff they've been doing. Like not only are you talking breezily about all the things you know I've been painfully missing for five damn years, YOU ARE THE REASON I CANT DO THEM

Good thing about getting older is by the time I stream the movie I forgot all the spoilers and comments about it. I’m never going to a movie theater again.

I haven’t seen a new movie spoiler free in yearsssss cause it takes so long to go from theaters to the safety of my home and honestly by then I’m so bitter from hearing about it relentlessly that I don’t even want to see it. I’ve never seen Barbie and I doubt I’ll watch Sinners.

i missed seeing sinners in theaters in my area because of just life and scheduling and i did get a lot of spoilers about it from social media but i watched it streaming a couple days ago and i thought it was fuckin great, still, for what it’s worth

I really thought I'd miss going to the movies, but to my surprise I only miss going to little indie theaters, & I'm perfectly fine waiting for big blockbuster releases come out on streaming. Like "Oh no, the new Marvel movie was spoiled, how can I enjoy this knowing the bad guy loses but survives."

I also don't know why theaters don't do, like, a couple screenings a week with COVID precautions. Bring in a bunch of air filters, enforce a good mask mandate, do it on a Tuesday or something and get a bunch of business in seats that would otherwise be mostly empty.

For what it's worth, anyone that went to see the new Jurassic World (I'm one of them) wasted their time and money. Hadn't gone to the theater since I saw Dune

I feel you on this so much. I was so lucky to get to see Sinners right before it left, in a nearly-empty theatre with two friends who mask. And according to my Aranet it was basically outdoor air the whole time (this was one of maybe 3x I've left my mask off for a few min while snacking!).

It sucks. I go to a few & wear a mask but many folk can't even risk that. That being said, neither Barbie nor Sinners are "surprise" movies. You'd figure the plot from the beginning, even if you didn't get spoilers, so the fun is mainly in the visuals and the performances. But still sucks.

saw sinners last week when it turned up on one of my streaming services, loved it even on a small screen. i stopped going to the movies before covid, it was a choice made for other reasons (cramped, loud, people suck, pee breaks...) which makes it less bitter that it's not much of a choice anymore.

If it's any consolation, a friend who saw Sinners in the theatre and streaming says the sound was much better at home and it was a much better experience!

One of the hardest pills to swallow after the pandemic is how easy it was to create tons of accommodations when abled people needed them, but as soon as they became exclusively needed by disabled people they were just as easily thrown away. bsky.app/profile/most...

sinners is good enough — if you like horror thrillers and music — that IMHO we can’t over-sell it and reflexive Gen-X style cynicism at popularity can’t sink it take your time! it’s worth seeing eventually

While this is a somewhat different scenario, I took my neurodiverse son to see "A Minecraft Movie" in an autism-friendly screening a week after it came out. There were six other people in the theatre (which could seat about 200). Might something like that be an option?

I miss concerts—I’m on so many listserves that have amazing musical options. All in person. My biggest rage is ofc for the Jewish orgs who supposedly care social justice, but I am just so sick of basically not existing anymore (while everyone living in this new normal gets sicker and sicker).

I teach a course where I ask who can drive a nail bare-handed. Some can, strong person competitions. I then ask who considers themselves nail-disabled. They all use accommodations (a hammer). That's when I point out "disabled" is demographics, and bring up the pandemic and work from home.

To point out that they only consider it a design imposition when it falls below a demographic threshold and categorizing design as "needed" and "nice to have" is discriminatory.

theaters were a sensory nightmare for me even before covid and so during covid there was this brief window where I could watch movies at the same time as other people and it was really cool, and I miss it!

I have mostly just made my peace with it because I would much rather watch everything on my ceiling projector and covid broke my memory so bad I forget spoilers at this point (lolcry) but when the new Star Wars were coming & I didn't want to be spoiled, it was crushing.

Especially because when you're trying to avoid spoilers, people can be SO MEAN. There's a very "how dare you think you should be able to do this, if you wanted to not be spoiled YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT ALREADY" yeah I wish I could have, too! please back off!

Due to the same issue, the sole time I went to a movie theater since 2020 was an 830am showing on a weekday, when there would be only a couple of others there at most. Still the only ones masked of course.

I've been to a theater *once* since covid got rolling. I timed it for the middle of the week and the middle of the day so it was the lowest traffic possible, and I was still the only one masked. 😒

I'm very lucky to have drive-in theatres where I live. Only way I've been able to see any of them. The downside is they don't have closed captioning devices. But, I also control the volume in my own car. Comme ci, comme ça.
