I got pertussis, not even this badly, when I was a child (no vaccine yet) and my mother genuinely thought I was going to die. And this was a *mild* case.

My kids have both had croup multiple times, and Youngest had to be intubated on the sitting room floor by the air ambulance team. I cannot imagine people dismissing respiratory issues in children: it’s absolutely terrifying.
Croup was what my brother had. Absolute nightmare sound, and I'm pretty sure he landed in hospital a couple of times 😬
It’s just awful. I’m fairly stoic with croup because we’ve had to deal with it so many times, but that night was a real dark time for all of us. Fortunately we now have a stash of dexamethasone, thanks to a sensible nurse practitioner.
I have been to hospital with a tiny baby with possible croup and it's terrifying and they see you so fast when their little chests are doing the terrifying sucking thing. We get every damn vaccine we can get our hands on.
It’s absolutely awful, isn’t it? I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy
My chicken pox became infected, GP told Mam in younger children (and I was under 10) that infection often killed them.
😬 😬 😬
Adding literal insult to injury I was then teased at school for my pock marks (not particularly bad ones) because of the perception that you only got them if you scratched your spots and so having them was a sign of moral failure.
Yes, my sons became infected too. I honestly believe that our blasé approach to chickenpox exposure is one reason why people don’t take measles etc seriously. They’ve never seen it (because science!) and because we see chickenpox as a rite of passage that’s the only comparison.
an uncle of mine caught it a couple years ago (they don't routinely booster adults) and it took him SIX MONTHS to fully recover. Now when I go get the t-d booster I insist on one with the p, too.
Very sensible. Nasty illness.
It’s a terrifying illness.
I sprained my diaphragm. Do not recommend.
My Mam maintained that I had whooping cough as a baby up to and including an episode where I was picked up out of my cot and held upside down by my ankles & whacked on my back to stop me coughing. My Dad was always more sceptical as to whether I had it or not, but clearly something went on.
