But for 45 years, Republicans dragged the Overton window to the right. Instead of pulling it back, the Democrats simply followed it. Obama was supposed to be hope and change. There was little change and by the end, there was no hope.

I agree on your first two points though, the Democrats try to compromise and take a step right to have the Republicans just take two further steps to the right. It’s time for the Democrats to stop trying to compromise with terrorists.
Obama did bring change. His healthcare reform insured 20 million previously uninsured working Americans. His budget policies brought back the housing market and construction jobs. He didn’t do as much as I wanted but he did more than any Republican has. As for hope we will always have hope.
I'll always remember Obama as the guy who didn't go after the bankers, who let them keep their bonuses while ordinary Americans lost jobs and homes. If he'd implemented universal healthcare, that would have been something.
It wasn't a coincidence Trump followed Obama. People were disillusioned and angry. Trump might be an ass clown but he knew how to channel that anger. Here's the bottom line: until ordinary people start seeing their lives improve and their kids lives looking up, democracy will continue to decline.
Most people don't follow politics. They don't know who's to blame only that their lives are getting worse and their kids have uncertain futures. When Dems brag about an economy that isn't working for them and jobs that don't pay shit, how does that look?
Imagine how good it could get if we stopped letting republicans rob us blind and set us back every 8 years. We may never know because Democrats are never given enough time or power in Congress to accomplish more than trying to recover from the last republican administration.
I have struggled far more throughout my lifetime during republican administrations than under democratic ones.
It looks like they are correct in comparison to how bad it gets EVERY time republicans take over.
Trump channeled people’s bigotry, racism, and sexism. He didn’t win because of Obama’s policies. Bigots didn’t bother to pay attention to what he passed legislatively. They were too busy spreading birther lies.
