But for 45 years, Republicans dragged the Overton window to the right. Instead of pulling it back, the Democrats simply followed it. Obama was supposed to be hope and change. There was little change and by the end, there was no hope.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
Both parties are to blame for decades of wage stagnation, the hollowing out of communities, spiraling costs of education, healthcare and housing. Just not equally. The US needs another FDR. Look how the Dems treated Sanders, Mamdani and AOC; and guess how they would treat an FDR.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
There's no denying that they're considerably better but are they sufficiently better? Both Clintons, Obama, Biden, Harris - they're all centrists with essentially identify economic stances. Incrementalists, not willing to do anything that would upset the billionaires.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
You think it was only Republicans that caused the wealth gap? Did it shrink during the Clinton and Obama years?
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
Who is Keith planning to rise against? Trump is the symptom. The problem is that half the people have lost faith in the country and are voting for a cartoon villain. Is he going to rise up against them?
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe you're having difficulty with comprehension as well. I directly answered in my original response.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
77 million people voted for a cartoon villain of a leader. Someone who was a joke candidate until one day he wasn't. Aren't you the least bit curious how and why that happened?
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
Neither of those. But I do pay attention and I do believe in looking for root causes, not just hating people who think differently. There's not many of us around at the moment and maybe that's why you're confused.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
That's an interesting take. How many of those jobs created paid a living wage that kept up with inflation? How many provided health insurance, sick time and paid vacation?
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social)
One of the biggest challenges for people is to look at negative things that are happening in their country through and accept it for what it is. MAGA isn't, as many claim, anti- American. Rather, it's hyper-American. It's a compilation of the worst aspects of American culture in one toxic brew.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social)
Welcome to the new America.

Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
Would that make sense to you? America is sick and all I see from the political and news media elite is a pure focus on the symptoms.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree but I don't see anyone (other than a handful of academics and scholars) attempting to understand the roots of the problem. Imagine you're in a hospital and your doctor focuses only on your symptoms, reviving you when your heart stops, but doesn't try to determine what disease you have.

What good would that do? Tens of millions of people *support* RFK Jr because they deeply distrust the institutions those white coats represent. The US will continue its decline until people are willing to critically examine the reasons behind it.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
People need to stop treating MAGA as cartoon villains and wonder WHY people no longer trust institutions and what it will take to fix this. There are reasons and they're complex.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
RFK Jr is a crackpot but he's still supported by 10s of millions of people. The reason for that is historic levels of distrust of institutions (the same reason Trump was elected). This is critical. Democracy *can't* survive when half the people deeply distrust institutions.

Flawed reasoning. If, as many believe, centrist incrementalist supporters of neo liberalism (like Clintons, Obama &Biden) helped push the country to a plane where people turned to Trump in desperation, then more of the same is NOT a step in the right direction. Even when it's the least bad choice

Here’s a fact: I would NEVER vote for someone because Hakeem Jeffries told me to. He has no sway with me at all. I would, however, consider voting for someone if Zohran Mamdani told me to. Because if he likes someone, that’s worth a look. I think Hakeem doesn’t fully grasp that shift.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
I normally agree with everything you say but not this. There are reasons MAGA has grown and those reasons include problems with those groups asking others. If you want things to get better, we need to be able to look at the structural problems that created the demand for MAGA.

Many of the mainstream Dems do NOT want to see progressive candidates succeed. No doubt some would prefer to have Republicans in power.

Democrats need to learn from Trump. For 45 years, they've chased the Overton window, moving steadily to the right on economics. Trump ignored the Overton window and spoke directly to the people. What's needed is someone who can do the same - but with positive motives.

Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
The Democratic party sees to it that most progressive candidates never see the light of day. The few that do make it through against all odds (Sanders, AOC, Mamdani) are attacked and marginalized by the centrists who run things. The party needs an overhaul.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
This is at best a stop gap. You don't fix political problems with lawsuits. You just kick them down the road and they get worse. The political center has LOST. You need to honestly ask yourselves why and adjust. Hopefully before it's too late.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
At voting time, I always recommend the lesser of two evils. But between elections is the time to build support for people who will bring needed changes. If not, things will continue to get worse.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social)
The anti-migrant sentiment is linked to the lack of a sense of economic security. When people feel threatened, they look for someone to blame and it's easy for demagogues to point the finger at migrants (or DEI). Centrist politicians with neo liberal economics won't save you cuz they're the cause
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social)
If we had responded to working class concerns on housing, healthcare, education and other affordability issues starting 30 years ago, the concerns over migrants would be manageable. The world now seems locked into a terminal state of stupid.

It goes both ways. You can hate their choices without hating them. I have "maple MAGA" relatives in Canada. It's painful and sometimes it feels like I lost my family to a cult. But the way out of this is to try to understand the deeper reasons for how they feel. Not the politics of enemies.

Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social)
The world's getting crazier by the second. Everybody wants to "fight" now. In a democracy, the only people to fight with are your fellow citizens. Time for me to unplug for a bit.

Deeply misguided. Obama was the symbol for hope. Now he represents what happens when the hope isn't backed my meaningful change. You won't save the country with lawsuits. if you want to save your country, be honest about why 77 million people turned to a malevolent orange clown as their savor.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
And I'm so curious. How are you proposing to change the world when you're only willing to talk to people who already think like you?
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
Are you a bot? Do you live in a cave? Have you actually MET any actual real live people??? Because if you did, you'd know they're complicated. They have reasons for what they do but they're often not good reasons and not logical.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
And WHY did so many people vote for a malevolent orange clown? Why in 2016? Trump wanted to be POTUS since the 80s! He was a joke candidate until suddenly he wasn't. What changed??? Centrists don't like to confront that question because it might reflect badly - on the country, the party & them.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
You're a walking sandwich board for political polarisation. If he's on THAT team, he must be as bad as Hitler. Joe isn't David Duke no matter how much you want to hate him. I suggest you grow up and learn to navigate the real world. And take some more Democrats with you.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
You talk to them NOW and you fix the country so you DON'T get to that point. Talking to people doesn't mean you agree with them. In a democracy, you don't get to write off half the population. Are you down for another civil war? If not, I suggest you ask for people like Joe for help.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
And BTW, the only people who are enjoying Newsom's antics are people who were always going to vote Democrat anyway.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
Trump is the symptom. What's the problem? What caused tens of millions of people to vote for a malevolent orange clown? Until someone figures that out and addresses it, things will get worse. And the wingnuts who get elected next will make you sentimental for him.
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
This is why the country is heading straight into the toilet. People think it's fine to talk and work only with those they agree with. You think you can shun and look down on half the population and still win elections. How's that working out for you?
Chris (@reefermadness.bsky.social) reply parent
He knows a lot of people, understands MAGA and how to talk to them, and still has a certain amount of influence in that community. If Democrats aren't working with & learning from him, they're blithering idiots.
