"They like punishment." You cannot convince me that this isn't a direct result of biblical teachings. It's a book with as much violence and retribution as love and understanding.

Eh, I think in isolation you still get lord of the flies. History is replete with cruelties untold perpetrated by nonbelievers and even predating Judaism. We have a penchant for doing unto others what we want, and for forgetting “there but by the grace of god goes i”
I think Americans lean into it, though. Our entire penal system is based on "eye for an eye" punitive, justice. We treat out inmates like animals, and justify it "because they deserve it." And it's gotten even worse as it's become big business. There is no attempt at rehabilitation in most cases.
Eye for an eye was Hammurabi tho, kinda proving my point. Except I agree with you. I think, however, it’s more the organization of certain religions and not the scripture itself. You’d be hard pressed to find 1-in-10 Americans who know scripture to any degree of competency.
Contrasting, every card caring “born-again” evangelist knows EXACTLY what preacher has to say about any social reality and it’s always “dark skin color people bad” and “white American good” conveniently.
