you cant deter crime thru relentless force. the longer it’s applied, the more visible errors accrue & the more citizens feel occupied. distrust in authority dissolves cooperation and you can’t solve crimes without citizens’ help. when police are a community’s enemy solving crime there is impossible.

the goal was never to deter crime, the goal is to antagonize unrest to later justify political violence.

the ramifications go beyond the street, which perhaps you may even see go quiet for a time. but what about crimes you can’t see from the sidewalk? when victims of crime see law enforcement as just a cold and menacing force they will not consider become a witness against the person tormenting them.

yes, deterring crime is definitely not the point, but destroying the argument that it’s even logically possible is the first step in getting people with their heads up their asses to realize that. and it’s important to know there are other harms, particularly if it’s accomplishing the opposite goal.

That cold menacing force IMO increases crime because people still want justice. It's prohibition mobsters and the war on drugs cartels vs the legalization we see now with less crime. Except it's the other crimes, the beefs, the slights, the small claims. People are going to seek justice w/o cops.
