not every internet challenge is named and called the “whatever challenge.” and not unlike cops themselves, the public is prone to a lot of monkey-see-monkey-do behavior. i doubt that’s less true with police interactions, particularly among people who don’t have existing trauma from one.

yes, deterring crime is definitely not the point, but destroying the argument that it’s even logically possible is the first step in getting people with their heads up their asses to realize that. and it’s important to know there are other harms, particularly if it’s accomplishing the opposite goal.
the ramifications go beyond the street, which perhaps you may even see go quiet for a time. but what about crimes you can’t see from the sidewalk? when victims of crime see law enforcement as just a cold and menacing force they will not consider become a witness against the person tormenting them.
you cant deter crime thru relentless force. the longer it’s applied, the more visible errors accrue & the more citizens feel occupied. distrust in authority dissolves cooperation and you can’t solve crimes without citizens’ help. when police are a community’s enemy solving crime there is impossible.
A great writer I admire once told me “You’re so serious and deep. And then you’re like, ‘haha boobs!’ It’s so fascinating.” Life is too short and too painful, dear writers I admire. Might as well give thanks to boobs.
