Your argument - essentially "I don't like the current UK government" - is vacuous. It will not persuade people to sit to independence. You know what would? A credible economic plan. But there isn't one.

Of course there is. And it’s more believable than any economic plan that would see Scotland prosper as part of a union which has failed it since inception.

It’s genuinely baffling how you can say, with a presumed straight face, that Scotland is better off staying part of a union that has only ever failed it. 65 countries have left, and not one has asked to rejoin. All, at some stage, were told the very same as you now maintain.

No. It's because Scotland should be a normal country. The UK Government's have sold Scotland out over and over again and used it to extract oil for tax cuts and dole queues. Steel industry gone, Refinery gone, miners smashed. Nukes dumped. Fecking Brexit. UK Economic policy has been a disaster

This is exactly it. Same as Wales. They should be independent countries, and that means for poorer or for better, no matter what their 'economic plan' is. Instead, we just get whatever corrupt charalatans the bigger country next door votes for.

98% of the World's countries are independent. I want to live in one too. One that votes for it's own Government (however good or bad they are). Currently I don't have that. I get labelled a nationalist looney for these views.

Duncan Hothersall @dhothersall.bsky.social

The UK is an independent country! By exactly the same standard as you are judging all the others. If independence makes us poorer, harming people’s lives, why on earth would you want that?

SmallClone @smallclone.bsky.social

A nation(s) within a country is moronic though. I don't want to be part of the UK / Britain, you need to understand that. It stands for all the things I despise. The answer is, I'd rather be poorer and in an independent country that gets whatever government it voted for, than what we have now.

aug 31, 2025, 5:09 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Duncan Hothersall @dhothersall.bsky.social

Again, "UK governments have been bad" isn't an argument for independence, it's an argument for better governments. Independence does not deliver better governments.

Shortbreadfairy©️ @shortbreadfairy.bsky.social

Er, sorry, but to be screwed over and over again by successive UK Governments is a motivation and a genuine reason for independence. No paper on Scottish Economic Policy would be acceptable to ultra unionists for a case on Scottish Independence. Independence can deliver a better Government.

Duncan Hothersall @dhothersall.bsky.social

No, that's nothing more than Brexit thinking. If there's no credible argument for *why and how* independence would improve people's lives then it's not going to be persuasive, because people have seen what happens when you vote for a pig in a poke like that, and it's been a disaster.

I've hit nerve but you're being deliberately obtuse, side stepping because The EHCR was drawn up to protect us, ranging from the right not to be tortured and Employment Rights. The far Right want to do away with oor Rights including Employment Rights. I'm sorry you don't think that's important.

It's incredible really because the UK was pretty much instrumental in the ECHR. It's a shame that people see it now as a problem because they want to cause misery to others. People need to accept, it's not the immigrant that is the issue, it's those who enact the policy that caused the immigration.

Susan, I find today that people do not seem to have the capacity to say they were wrong. I am not saying you are, you have your realities around what Labour are. Personally, I would like to see Scotland steer it's own course. Yes, there will be stormy waters, but it will at least be our own boat.

You are human, for me to state your biases would be wrong. But for you to act like you have none, is also wrong. We are all the product of our experiences and as such have biases based on those experiences. The issue today with facts is that if the reader doesn't agree, they aren't seen as facts.
