Is it weird to say that Jax is one of my favorite characters in Digital Circus? He's the absolutely fucking worst but his reasoning and the way he interacts with the cast is so fucking INTERESTING. It's a three-way tie between Kinger, Zooble, and Jax for my favorite, atm.
Kinger the goat Then Ragatha then Zoobl THEN Jax, I love to hate him and i can see where they're going with him and it's sad in an interesting way
Honestly totally fair. I feel like he is such a well portrayed character, I can't help but love him. Him, Zooble, and Gangle are up there for me (also Gummigoo but he isn't main cast so...)
Kinger's probably my current favorite. I'm like, disturbingly similar to Ragatha. Uncomfortably so. But they're all fun! Love the show!

I have never seen such a bastard of a character get some sympathy out of me. It’s easy to see that he finds comfort in being “the funny one”. He acts like a bully and a villain because he would rather have everyone hate him, rather than form a bond with someone who may abstract.
I'm so curious what the dynamic between him and Kofmo or the Frog-girl was. When he blows up at Pomni he's projecting *so much* it becomes revealing. Sure, Rags intimated he used to have an actual friend, but certainly didn't blame him as he claims.
Rather, his own guilt is seemingly just eating him up inside from failing what must have been the only person he hadn't pushed away with his shitty behavior. He can't live with that, but he can't drop the act without abandoning his only coping mechanism either, or facing those he's hurt.

Out of all the characters I relate to Jax the most. Course he does things in a negative, because he's very young and naive. Masks up to hide the pain. Highly indifferent from trauma. He also greatly feels hes undeserving of any positive emotions. I cant wait to see what Gooseworx does with him.
Early on I likened him to a troll in a video game. The team killing jackass who doesn't care about ruining others fun because they view other people in multiplayer games as NPC's. Which, isn't far off to how he behaves and wants to believe. That boy has a few screws loose but one things certain.
He's an asshole. I don't care what his trauma is, if that's how he's handling it, he's an asshole. I'm interested in seeing how deep that runs. Will he get worse before his inevitable redemption? Or has his redemption arc started? Time will tell.

I don't like him, but the latest episode made his cruelty more intriguing, to a degree. My guess is he's reasoned that making people miserable and angry, and focusing/sourcing those directly from/at him, is somehow creating more mental stability. Hard to spiral when you're busy being pissed off.

I don't think that's an accurate read on Jax. His entire issue is that he was a decent guy, but lost his best friend when they abstracted, so he leaned into being a cartoon character who doesn't take anything seriously because it's easier than being friends with people, only for them to lose them.
When has that been confirmed? I must have missed the part where this is all just lashing out (Which, I won't say I like that read any better, but I'm willing to admit if my take is off)
He says that, eventually, everyone falls into their roles. He chose to be "The Funny One." This implies that he didn't start out this way. And considering his reaction to Ragatha mentioning how his last friend (confirmed to be Ribbit by the creator) abstracted? It obviously deeply affected him.
And then, when Pomni brings up characters abstracting -- and it possibly being his fault -- he FREAKS OUT. He also gets deeply upset at Ragatha after she says, "You're trying to corrupt Pomni!" And when Pomni hugs him? He loses his shit for a moment, then turns the "nihilism" back on.
FINALLY SOME ONE SAID IT I've seen so many people say "Ragatha called Jax Out" when like...No?! It's clear that and Pomni's comment about abstraction hit a nerve of him feeling like everyone blames him for what happened to ribbit, even he does to a point.
also, I feel like everyone overlooks the like "you're seriously blaming me for something Everyone else did too!!?" Like, maybe everyone was kind of antagonistic beforehand, and when ribbit abstracted, Jax was made the sort of scapegoat
He is *terrified* of letting people get close again. Because it's easier to keep people at arm's length than have them grow close, only for them to leave him again.

See, this all leads me to how they ended up here and what they were like in the real world. Jax probably had a hard time making friends, so making them here and losing hurt Zooble didn't like how she looked Ragatha suffers from abuse of having to be perfect and helpful Pomni so far same as jax
Gangle has self esteem and depression issues (put on the happy mask when behind it your sad) Kinger, the outlier. I have theories on who he really is
My guess is Kinger and his wife are the original creators of the program, and by the time we find them, Kinger has been in the circus for YEARS, and has seen hundreds abstract.
Which is why he needs to be in darkness to come back to his senses, because he made the hell he's trapped in, and literally everything he sees triggers his psychosis. It's also why he's probably as kind as he is, because he knows there's no escape, and saying anything just makes people snap faster
I see your point, but it's just not hitting for me. I've watched this arc before several times in real life. How it ends tends to just be depressing. So for me, the progression is boring, cuze either everyone forgives him and he grows (fiction), or he consumes himself (reality)
Which in itself could be interesting, but I never had a reason to like Jax in the first place, so I had no reason to be hooked by his turmoil. Also his idea of "being a cartoon" is just being a dick, and doubling down when anyone points that out. That got old in episode 2 imo
The theme of how each character copes with being trapped in the circus is facinating. Kinger calms himself in the dark, Ragatha pushes herself to please everyone, and Jax embraces a cynical behavior for amusement. Through the show, we're starting to see who will falter to their coping mecanism
While the other two are pretty accurate, Ragatha's coping mechanism doesn't seem like a byproduct of her circus trauma at all. Rather, it seems to be a byproduct of her upbringing with her strict mother (as does her inability to truly connect with others as a result).

I do think it's part of the tragedy of his character that he fears and subsequently rejects the notion that he could be responsible for someone's abstraction, which just feeds into him continuing to play the "funny asshole whose actions have no lasting consequences" even when they clearly do.
Eh, I feel like Ragatha's accusation of trying to corrupt Pomni just confused rather than upset him. It was being made the butt of a very cartoony joke that seemed to be what genuinely upset him, because for the self-proclaimed 'funny' one, he actually does not like when funny things happen to him.
Or, perhaps it's more accurate to say, that for a guy who claims to embrace his cartooniness, he actually hates to be reminded that he's actually living in a cartoon.
That makes sense. Guess I didn't put the pieces together (nor did I know about the confirmation) I see where you are coming from, but I just don't find that kind of character progression interesting to watch, I guess. I've grown up with people like this, and honestly, it just makes me annoyed

Completely fair. I will give the writers this much, it is interesting that he can create such different reactions in different people. Personally though, I'm far more interested in everyone else. Like I think Cane is far more fascinating. Annoying, yes, but...
The idea of a clearly failed AI, trying to grow and do a better job, but their own coding is SO in their own way that they can't help but fuck it up, and are clearly breaking more and more with each failure is far more interesting to me than Jax's mask.
It's like if AM from 'I have no mouth' had a change of heart FAAR too late, and now is stuck in their own self created hell
It’s abundantly clear that he does in fact care and his mental breakdown at the end of episode 6 exemplifies it more than anything.
See, to me, that is painfully obvious from the first time we were introduced to him, and as Scott pointed out, his nihilistic trauma is based on the loss of his friend. But by the time they've hinted to that in ep6, I'm sick of the bit and I don't care.
When I say "nihilism for the sake of it" What I mean is that nihilism in itself is always an act brought about by trauma. A truly nihilistic character, who doesn't care about anything, wouldn't feel the need to tell everyone about it. I feel like Zoobile and I share a perspective on Jax in a way
Personal taste is what it is, so I'm not gonna say you're wrong for disliking something, that is valid. That said, I don't think it's accurate to say it's weird that people like him. Settings like that benefit from a source of conflict and the ensemble as a whole would be weaker without him.
I deeply hate characters like Jax, but that might just be a me thing 🤷♀️

Ngl this feels like the most common take, I think most fans love Jax and especially his role in the last episode. I personally don't see the appeal, ik he's traumatized and shutting people out but I don't find him all that compelling. But I can see how other people might gravitate to him
Not really, I find his actor is killing it in the role and I got a thing for characters that know that they're evil yet owns it in a fun way. Kinda in that FMA Envy sort of way (hopefully with less of a body count).
