Okay you gave the Times your ten best movies of the century, but what about your ten best ALBUMS, hmm? Hit me with that shit.

My list: -Kid A, Radiohead -In Rainbows, Radiohead -Songs for the Deaf, QOTSA -I Get Wet, Andrew WK -The College Dropout, Kanye West -Everybody Wants, The Struts -Crack the Skye, Mastodon -Rubber Factory, Black Keys -Is This It, The Strokes -Hi Fi Serious, A

I get wet is so good.
Needs more White Stripes
Make your own like everyone is doing yo
I have a tough time with favorites, but White Blood Cells would be on there. I'll give it a shot
At least one album from Fiona Apple, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and Tool
Hard to argue
Rubber Factory is a perfect album and the way the Black Keys abandoned its sound breaks my heart
I GET WET, fuck yeah
not a single album by a woman?
Could copy and paste this reply in response to a fair number of the lists in response, too, sadly
Damn Drew. Yer basic. Check out Who Let the Dogs Out by Lambrini Girls and Remi Wolf’s Big Ideas to diversify yer bonds dawg.
You are a football guy...don't tell me you don't love Taylor Swift.
Beyoncé alone could occupy like 3 slots!
Okay yeah I probably deserve a paddlin for that
No woman on the list? That’s a paddlin’
Avril Lavigne's Let Go is a perfect album and should be on every list by a elder millennial/young Gen X.
Back to Black by Winehouse, absolutely. Avril Lavigne? Fuck no.
Drew is a boomer confirmed. 😛
Solange’s A Seat at the Table was masterful
Fever to Tell is pretty damn good.
Yes, yes it is
there are like hundreds of very good albums put out by women this century so far lol
And my arg is fever to tell is on that list!
get his ass 💪
Could swap out shitty Black Keys for Sleater Kinney, The Woods
Perfect album
-now that’s what I call music, vol. 7-15, 18.
you can't even hear it!
Fuck yeah I Get Wet.
When it's time to party we will party hard
Lost In The Dream, The War on Drugs Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco Kid A, Radiohead Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend Chutes Too Narrow, The Shins Transatlanticism, Death Cab for Cutie Give Up, Postal Service My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye Bitte Orca, Dirty Projectors Saint Cloud, Waxahatchee
My fave Ye album 😭
My initial list, the final 10: In Rainbows, Radiohead North, Something Corporate Meteora, Linkin Park 1989, Taylor Swift BlakRoc, BlakRok The Crane Wife, The Decemberists My Head is an Animal, Of Monsters & Men Under the Blacklight, Rilo Kiley RTJ4, Run the Jewels 10,000 gecs, 100 gecs
Turn On the Bright Lights (Interpol) Change (Dismemberment Plan) Late Registration (K. West) In Rainbows (Radiohead) Tomorrow’s Harvest (Boards of Canada) RTJ 3 (Run the Jewels) Z (My Morning Jacket) Tenacious D When We All Fall Asleep… (Billie Eilish) Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (Flaming Lips)
That Interpol album is No Skips. Not a one.
Crack the Skye is amazing. Still my favorite Mastodon album.
Songs for the Deaf, QOTSA MBDTF, Kanye Mass Romantic, The New Pornographers Brick Body Kids Still Daydream, Open Mike Eagle Never Hungover Again, Joyce Manor Worry, Jeff Rosenstock Beat The Champ, The Mountain Goats Weirdo Shrine, La Luz Painted Shut, Hop Along ST, Hospitality
No particular order: Mountain Goats/The Sunset Tree Foo Fighters/Echoes, Silence... Cake/Comfort Eagle Robyn Hitchcock/Spooked Sigur Ros/() Aimee Mann/Lost in Space Fountains of Wayne/Welcome Interstate Managers Radiohead/In Rainbows Mike Doughty/Haughty Melodic Gillian Welch/Time (The Revelator)
Aimee Mann 😭 Just listened to the Magnolia soundtrack again for the first time in years.
I just saw her on the anniversary tour for Lost in Space. They played the whole album.
We can hang, imo
Oh god dammit I meant yout top ten albums of this century. Your all time lists means NOTHING to me.
Regardless, this is still a goddamned homework assignment
Fair
The saving grace is I've barely listened to new music since 2022
Actually surprised that I found more than a few released SINCE 2000. XTC -- Wasp Star Tom Waits -- Blood Money Branford Marsalis -- The Secret Between... Flaming Lips -- At War With The Mystics Camper Van Beethoven -- New Roman Times Elvis Costello -- The Delivery Man Primus -- Desaturating 7
Blood Money is a great album
It's probably his best in "this century." "Glitter And Doom" is better but it's a live album, so...🤷♂️
No shit — now I’ve gotta check my collection for RELEASE DATES? The horror, the horror…
Yep...was convinced Lonesome Crowded West and Jonathan Fire*Eaters debut album were in this century, but both were in 97. Weird
That’s what tripped me up on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998).
And THEN! I sat down with iTunes and it wasn’t so bad. Not very hip, but not so bad. 🤷🏻♂️😂
Thx to your example and yours only...I just did "my homework." And I appreciate your due diligence. Just checked all release dates via iTunes. Don't worry, all is forgiven. Posting my old man selections in 3, 2, 1...
Okay I'm shutting off the reply spigot for this one. You now have a treasure trove of 21st century all timers at your disposal below
Damn. Back to the drawing board. Lol.
They don't want to tell you that they stopped listening to new music sometime in the last century.
For real!
-Interpol, Turn on the Bright Lights -Cowboy Mouth, Uh-Oh -Green Day, American Idiot -Eminem, Encore -Lily Allen, It's Not Me It's You -Killers, Day & Age -Florence & the Machine, Ceremonials -Awolnation, Megalithic Symphony -Linkin Park, Living Things -Girl Talk, All Day (cheating perhaps but idc)
Fugazi - The Argument Boris - Pink Sleep - The Sciences Death Grips - The Money Store Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out Nala Sinephro - Space 1.8 Radiohead - Kid A Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind Q and Not U- No Kill No Beep Beep
Wait how the hell did I miss Songs: Ohio- Magnolia Electric Co.? Call it 11 then
Rubber Factory is a great call. People forget!!
Andrew WK and the CORRECT Black Keys album! 🫡
Cringe
I came so close to the double Radiohead as well, but wanted to limit it to one per band
Better to do artists, not albums. Hence: Guster Death Cab for Cutie The Decembrists Taylor Swift John Mayer Brandi Carlyle Sara Bareillis Regina Spektor Radiohead Billie Eilish Honorable Mention: Lady Gaga Beyonce Ed Sheerin Amy Winehouse Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats
Lost and Gone Forever would have been in my top 10 for sure if it hadn't been 1999
They do straddle a bit.
Sky Blue Sky--Wilco Kid A--Radiohead Amnesiac--Radiohead The Suburbs--Arcade Fire Funeral--Arcade Fire Currents--Tame Impala Silent Alarm--Bloc Party Turn on the Bright Lights--Interpol Alligator--The National Double EP Sea of Split Peas--Courtney Barnett
Currents and Suburbs on mine ✅ ✅
Unranked: Separation Sunday (The Hold Steady) Kid A (Radiohead) Ravedeath 1972 (Tim Hecker) Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (GY!BE) Krallice Kentucky (Panopticon) Geneva (Russian Circles) Pushin' Against a Stone (Valerie June) Dodecahedron One Beat (Sleater-Kinney)
Tim Hecker scares the living fuck out of me, in a great way
Yeah, he's the sonic embodiment of pure foreboding. I'd heard of him forever, didn't actually start listening to him until very recently tbh but I can't stop. Been through the whole discography so many times lately!
Great way to describe his work
Dude. Hifi Serious is such a banger. tidal.com/browse/track...
Radiohead - In Rainbows Radiohead - Kia A Tyler, The Creator - Igor Angel Olsen - My Woman Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear Father John Misty- Mahashmashana Purple Mountain - Purple Mountains National - Boxer Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
A Deeper understanding - War On Drugs Trouble Will Find Me - The National The king is dead - Decembrists Hypersonic Missiles - Sam Fender Hypnotic Eye - Tom Petty The Wind - Warren Zevon Stadium Arcadium - RHCP West - Lucinda Williams Strange Trails - Lord Huron Salesmen and Racists - Ike Reilly
Surprised you didn't list From the Fires, Great Van Fleet.
Decemberists?
Not my bag
not a fan of the harpsichord?
Someday This Could All Be Yours, Vol. 1 - Paper Chase Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco Perfecting Loneliness - Jets to Brazil DAMN.- Kendrick Lamar Celestial Blues - King Woman 1000 Hurts - Shellac Flies the Fields - Shipping News Figure 8 - Elliott Smith Mirrored - Battles Identikit - Burning Airlines
I generally don't listen to much made after 1990, but: I'd choose Moon-Shaped Pool over In Rainbows, for the second Radiohead album. And my personal favorite would be David Bowie's Blackstar. Absolutely brilliant.
- The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid - Magnolia Electric Co. - The Way Out of Easy - Healing is a Miracle - Blazing Arrow - My Woman - Punisher - Ruins - @0 - ( )
Crack the Skye over Leviathan is a choice. An incorrect choice, but a choice nevertheless.
The proper decision would be to put both on the list.
it’s 3 way with Blood Mountain for me
-Year Zero, Nine Inch Nails - Kid A, Radiohead - St Vincent, St Vincent - Fever to Tell, Yeah Yeah Yeahs -Return to Cookie Mountain, TV on the Radio - In Rainbows, Radiohead - Saul Williams, Saul Williams - Frances The Mute, The Mars Volta - Quebec, Ween Merriweather Post Pavilion, Animal Collective
"I Get Wet" is unironically a terrific album.
One of the best ever made
Radiohead - Amnesiac (2001) Low - Things We Lost in the Fire (2001) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell (2003) LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (2007) Why? Alopecia (2008) Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest (2009) Aesop Rock - Skelethon (2012) Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012) ...
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell (2015) Alvvays - Blue Rev (2022)
Rubber Factory! The only Black Keys I might still revisit
I love Brothers. The whole album has a great vibe.
Not even Brothers?
I very much didn’t like Magic Potion and by the time Brothers came out I wasn’t particularly interested, so it was “fine” but it never stuck.
Gotta give Delta Kream a shot
Did not expect to see Hi Fi Serious on anyone’s list 👍
Love lists like this, especially some of which I know perfectly well and others of which never heard of it.
I've been working on a bit of a theory that I Get Wet and Andrew WK in general started off as some sort of performance art/parody album, but he was too good at it and accidentally made a legit banger. The over-the-top bro-ness of it all is too wild to be real
The urban legend is that Dave Grohl wrote the entire album, and I fully believe it
I had never heard this legend before so I went and listened, and my reaction is that I would fully believe that *Springsteen* wrote I Get Wet. But to my ears there is nothing on the album that melodically or rhythmically resembles anything Grohl has ever done.
That 1,000% tracks and I am now all in on that explanation
It also helps explains why all of his subsequent albums are lousy
The Wolf is every bit as good as Wet!
We’ll have to agree to disagree there
We can agree the rest is mostly useless at least
Shake The Sheets - Ted Leo & The Pharmacists To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick St. Vincent - self-titled Book - They Might Be Giants Dig, Lazarus, Dig - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Almost Killed Me - Hold Steady Stankonia- OutKast Boygenius - The Record Turnstile - Glow On Iowa - Slipknot

That Antlers album is something else. So good(and incredibly sad)
recently saw silberman live for the third time and it always remains weirdly heartening how much people in the audience are begging to hear the world's saddest songs
I get it. I’m a big fan of The National and they refer to themselves as Sad Dad music. It’s like therapy.
Just to throw some different genres in there, frank ocean channel orange and anderson paak Malibu.
Saw her open for Gaslight Anthem in New Orleans a few years ago. Phenomenal! That room was rocking.
Never seen Laura solo or with any of her new bands, but I saw Against Me at least five times
Since 2000? 1. Anathema - Weather Systems 2. Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here 3. Thrice - Vheissu 4. Isis - Panopticon 5. Balmorhea - Stranger 6. Boysetsfire - Tomorrow Come Today 7. Caspian - Waking Season 8. The Contortionist - Clairvoyant 9. Gang of Youths - Go Farther in Lightness
I can't listen to it anymore but I prefer mbdtf over college dropout. 808s is better too.
808s is my second after MBDTF, but yeah, hard to listen to now.
I don’t think you’re alone in feeling that way
I read somewhere that Kanye said he actually hated mbdtf so I take that as permission to still like it.
Just an incredible, and correct, inclusion of AWK.
-It was written, Nas
"Crack the Skye" HELL YEAH
I get wet needs to be on water more top 10s. Including mine (missed opportunity)
Way more* what's up autocorrect
why do people like radiohead so much genuine question
Uh, the century begins when?

All of these lists just make me feel nostalgic for when there were bands
Went back and forth between Electric Version and Twin Cinema but Stacked Crooked won out
Twin Cinema is a perfectly suitable alternative. Can’t go wrong with really any of their albums.
Fuck ya Doves
This is the correct answer.
Bless you for Wye Oak. Find their cover of ‘We Belong’ on YT if you haven’t heard it.
I did mine in a retweet, but it’s really fucking hard to fit ten albums in a post if you enjoy pretentious shit like Green Carnation or Godspeed You Black Emperor. And I love those bands.

Fox Confessor 😍😍
Neko’s voice on that record omg
I saw her live in Birmingham, AL with My Morning Jacket and went with friends who didn't know her music. All they could talk about on the way home was her voice. She does an Aretha Franklin cover of Runnin' Out of Fools on Blacklisted that makes me want to cry lol
I saw her in London a few years back. She did Oracle of the Maritimes and it was an out of body experience
I’ve only seen her in concert once but she swallowed a bug mid-song and kept right on going!
The answer is Led Zeppelin II, ten times.

I haven't seen but I'll add it to my list
It's ostensibly in a trilogy that starts with "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz," which are all rather different from each other but pretty darn good, if you've seen any.
Hot Fuzz has been on my list so this is useful info - thanks!

I worked a college radio station in Georgia for a couple years that was mostly staffed with twee indie rockers and a number of metalheads, but they all managed to agree on how damn good Blue Record was
I usually cut my metal taste off at all-screaming/yelling (prefer more melodic vox) but yeah that record just moves me. We finished our basement a few years ago, and man the way that hits when dog tired at 12am on your Xth beer to finish stuff up 😂

I think Twin Cinema is the better New Pornographers album, but I get it. That Frightened Rabbit album is a masterpiece. So glad I got the chance to see them.
The highs are higher on TC, but the lows are lower. And I have a stronger emotional connection to In the Morse Code of the Brake Lights (came out on our wedding day, almost saw them that night too) And it took me a full 3-4 years after Scott’s death to listen to any songs without sobbing.
Mass Romantic by the New Pornographers has to be on there

Yoooo Deltron 3030, my man. I actually saw them perform at a festival with a full backing band way back in 2012. Unreal show.
Damn, that's a good get, as far as hard to see performances go. I saw Del come out and do that one Gorillaz song during a Damon Albarn set at a festival one time, something you won't even get at most Gorillaz shows.
Colors fucking rules
Love that Fiery Furnaces album, haven't heard anyone else mention it in years!
They're back together and touring apparently!
Dre 2001 would be on this list if it hadn't been released in 1999. Ridiculous behavior for someone who calls himself a "doctor"
It might not be among the Top 10 most ridiculous things about that album to be fair.
Hmm. I'll be serious but no particular order. Too hard to rank. And only 1 album per artist. 1) Nightwish - Endless Forms Most Beautiful 2) Dreadnaughtss - Victory Square 3) Kamelot - One Cold Winter's Night 4) Bear McCreary - Singularity 5) Ayreon - The Source

In no particular order except for that 1 and 2 are 1 and 2.
American Idiot seems to have been forgotten and I don’t understand why
Not in my house! But maybe it’s because it’s very much of its time, and the political divisions of 2004 seem almost quaint today (I don’t really think that’s totally correct, but I could see why someone would think that)
I think the political divisions were…calmer? Maybe that’s the right word. But I did get yelled at by a boomer in a parking lot for listening to that album because it meant I “hated America.” Circa 2006.
I don’t really think they were all that calm at the time, but they feel calm in retrospect now because of what’s happened since.

I have not listened to "Ghost is Born," but I should! Didn't recall that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came in 2002.
I've run into a lot of Ghost Is Born haters over the years but it's always been my favorite Wilco album, respect
Nice to see another person call out Kaputt, probably the best album of the century.

Take away Kozelek being a sex creep, I loved everything Kozelek. But Benji...I don't like. The stream of consciousness, the no attempt to write lyrics, I just don't get at all. Ghosts of the Great Highway is his last great album and I'm ok dying on that hill
To add, I'm glad you listed him and if you like it, that's awesome. But as a fan from the beginning, he completely had lost me by Benji
Definitely hear that. I think for me it had the opposite effect. I resonated with the stream of consciousness as means for feeling his sense of breakdown and exasperation with aging and career listlessness. I always felt it was his Blood on the Tracks and Ben’s my Friend his Tangled Up in Blue.
Which century?

I think the people responding all listen to the same kind of music. Is this just an age/Bluesky thing?
Yes, and yes. 🤓

Going to see Queens in Boston in October. Songs for the Deaf is really #2. I didn't want to look like the rabid fan I am.
This is a good list. How did I forget Madvillainy…
Not enough people remember the Argument.
Run the Jewels II, III, or IV should be showing up on these lists
RTJ4 is an all timer for me. Once I heard it I was hooked on it for a WHILE (still keep a lot of tracks from it in heavy rotation)
Taylor Swift - 1989 The National - Boxer Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself Mark Knopfler - Get Lucky Shearwater - Animal Joy Lizzie No - Halfsies Laura Veirs - July Flame jeremy messersmith - The Silver City Neko Case - Middle Cyclone Peter Gabriel - i/o
Shearwater critically underrated but prefer Rook. Respectable list
I think Meiburg’s vocals on Animal Joy are among the best I’ve ever heard. Just pre-ordered their new one yesterday!
He's one of the best vocalists I've ever seen live and a super nice guy to boot
I bought Animal Joy from him when I saw them on that tour. Fun memory. :)

New TWO, I should say!
Rook is my favorite Talk Talk LP of the century.
Rook is way too baroque imo but I can see the comparison in the later albums
It's just vocally, to be fair. Fantastic band, nevertheless.
