I find it quite outrageous that a dog breed developed in America is named an "Australian Shepherd" for marketing purposes. The dogs used in Australia for sheep herding are the Kelpie (Australian) and the Border Collie. For cattle another Australian breed, the Cattle Dog is used.

Marketing purposes? They were commonly called that because they developed from herding dogs arriving in California FROM Australia with the sheep herds, and the name stuck. There is no marketing about it. It is an important part of the breed's origin story.

Who hurt you? There is a contrived breed called the North American Shepherd, made out of smaller Aussie stock with even smaller mix-ins. The only people who can identify it are those pushing the gimmick. The Aussie name is as legitimate as that of a Quarter or Morgan Horse.

I guess it depends on where you are from. Docking dogs tails is quite rightly banned in Australia for example. And most civilised countries I imagine. But certain breeds have natural mutation for stub tails, e.g. corgis I think is another. Every now and again one will slip through.

From that angle, the Aussie just looks like a full blue merle Border Collie. Flek has some blue merle in the family, and some of his siblings had one blue eye. Here is his "yes, I've been a bad dog" pose.
