They don't, actually. Their children earn the right to self ownership when the parent dies or is indisposed. It's the origin of the trope of telling a young child that he's the "man of the house" now comes from - without a patriarch to own him, he has been thrust prematurely into self ownership.

You will see this all the time in the adult children of conservatives. Every bit of autonomy that can be withheld is so withheld unless there is a pledge to use it in keeping with the mandates of a living parent - the persists well into adulthood and why there are so many conservative man children.

Conservative parents want every single aspect of their children's lives to conform to their narrow worldview. To them, a child is an investment in a conservative future that preserves their legacy.

The good news is, from my observations, it works less than 50% of the time no matter how strong the conditioning is. That's why they want to codify what other parents can do into law. Not only do they not want contrary views to exist at all, they know their children will go "astray" if they see them

I don't have children but I absolutely do and will continue to do so. The current moment is really scary to me for those reasons, as it feels like they're implementing "children as property" on a national and *international* scale. They want a Trump Youth who'll stay loyal to their parents
