This reminded me of someone I knew when I was a kid - he'd seen friends and lovers die horrible deaths and was undoubtedly traumatized when the evangelical fundamentalists lured him in. They convinced him he could be "cured", he married a woman, and last I looked him up he's a registered Republican.
I wonder how many similar stories are out there - probably thousands.
I know of at least a couple of stories like that. Evangelicalism found them as they were unpacking childhood trauma. We no longer talk, because I knew them when they were in queer relationships. They put everything aside, like none of us ever happened.
