What was the point of the Dems leaving the state if they were just going to come back after a couple weeks and let this happen? I'm genuinely just confused by the whole thing

The rules for breaking quorum are specific in that they can't just stay out of state forever... but this was meant to give time to Governor Newsom & others to draft their own plans in retaliation. I think they thought it would make the Texas GOP backdown... spoilers, they're willing to kill us all.
The only other excuse I've seen so far is "you can't sue over something that hasn't happened yet" so they were going to have to let it happen at some point, but I fail to see the point with the courts as they are.
the point was attention. nobody would. have known this was happening if they didn't leave and make a big scene.
Yeah I dunno either
To try to make their capitulation look like resistance.
Buying time for CA and other Dem states, raising awareness of what's going on, locally and nationally (and prbly making it even more unpopular elsewhere with how abusive Texas Rs have been in the process), and buying time to file lawsuits as soon as Abbott signs it.
They didn't have the numbers to stop it forever with the Texas GOP in lockstep and how the rules for quorum breaks were changed to be more punitive in 2021 after the last time they tried to stop insanity down here. But they also didn't have many other options either, unfortunately.
