I hate this not only because it makes me feel old (but also that), but because they did real character work in the first decade that’s now lost. Like it’s not incidental to their characters that Homer and Marge were teens in the ‘70s, or that Skinner was a Nam vet— it informs them.
There is going to be an episode showing Homer as a child watching Season 1 of the Simpsons, isn't there?
More broadly, the show was originally rooted in a very particular snotty boomer viewpoint (non-derogatory), and it lost a lot when it got passed down to writers too young to organically share it.
