On top of all the non-appealing ideas here what the heck is it with Microsoft and voice? Like, stop it. Nobody wants to talk to their PC all day. This is a terrible vision of the future and I hope they do not take this path.

Cortana will come back !!
Come on, John. Everyone remembers the thrill of shouting “Cortana, what’s that” at their Kinect every time they killed a Grunt in CE:A so the game would grind to a halt and you could read a text log explaining the intricacies of the thing you just shot in the face for the 800th time that level.
I don't recall people clamoring for Cortana or Copilot either.
You can just not use it...
AI this, AI that, how about they shut up and go listen to some Weird Al instead?
Windows is the best thing that's happened to Linux
xbox turn off
All I want is for start->search to search for things on my actual device.
I agree, let me search files, and never Bing.
That is why when support for win10 ends I will slowly move to Linux I had enough of what Microsoft did.
they gotta make it worse somehow
Accessibility issue as well
No exaggeration, Windows biggest problem is Microsoft. It's amazing to see a company alternate between seeming not to care about a product and actively trying to make it worse.
Considering buying a Mac or switching to Linux for like the 10th time in a year.
Most modern and worth playing games are perfect on Linux (for example Fedora) and Proton.
I hope they finally fix Nvidia support on Linux by the time I decide to flee from Windows, or AMD makes a high-end card. On Bazzite, I can't turn off my screen and turn it back on without the image corrupting, rendering the computer unusable, and forcing a hard power cycle with the power button.
Just imagine working in an office environment full of cubicles and everyone is talking to their PC non-stop. This will never happen.
Wasn't that why Cortana failed? No one wanted to actually talk to their PCs, office workers want to use word and spread sheets and gamers wanted to game.
I can see a point with vision-impaired and illiterate folks but still, that is NOT the way yo go
So far Nadella has proven he'll happily pursue every single dumb useless idea that nobody wants because just looking like they do something "new" makes the lines in some graphs go up. So of course they'll try to force everyone to use this and if it doesn't work he'll just fire another 10000 people.
Scotty does.
Unfortunately they will. Microsoft is making one bad decision after the other the last 10 years or so. Look at their Windows update quality, it feels like they're using AI instead of QA nowadays.
Nothing has ever been more reliable than tactile input. I find the idea that voice or gestures being more frictionless tends to be the opposite of how it really works.
Gestures are the worst! I hate having to look up a guide on how to do basic tasks on my phone. Even worse, I hate when I accidentally do a gesture that I didn't know existed and can't figure out what it was or what it just did. Gesture based navigation can die in a fire. 😤
Even if voice worked perfectly, say you're working in an office with an open floor plan, that's a noisy environment with people chatting all over the place. Do they honestly think people want to spend 8 hours a day yelling dictation to their PCs?
I don't even use voice commands on my phone. I disable as much of it as I can.
Have they learned nothing from doing this to Xbox? Oh, man...
I used to use voice commands in windows 10 all the time for basic tasks (checking weather, time, locking screen etc ) and miss that but why use it for complex stuff when your hands do it better ?
Installed Bazzite 2-3 weeks ago and when I read news like this now, I just laugh.
i can't wait to use this in an office or library where everyone talking at the computer for info will be welcomed with open arms.
Taking the "Kinect journey" on Windows will be a dumpster fire...
I can’t say I love the stranglehold Steam has on PC gaming, but better a duopoly than a monopoly. I’m incredibly thankful for what Valve has done for gaming on Linux after they (rightfully) saw MS’s position as a serious risk to their business
I was thinking recently that I kinda do want to talk to my PC sometime, although not in the way that Microsoft wants me to- my hands hurt when typing for a long time and the ability to push a button to feed a sentence or two into text would be great. The built-in speech-to-text isn't good enough
Try a Mac with Voice Control: support.apple.com/en-us/102225 support.apple.com/it-it/guide/... support.apple.com/it-it/guide/...
bro
Bro what's wrong
Yep, my neck/shoulders are a mess and speech-to-text is a godsend. The built in one is pretty mid.
It's why I use classic shell, to avoid that nonsense, new start menu is just as bad
Harsh.
If there's a class of professionals that wants to be able to give vocal commands to a non-human servant, it absolutely is the executive class, the most in touch with the needs and wants of humanity as a whole.
Maybe you folks at DF can do some more Linux gaming testing now that you are independent?
They doing it pretty often .. what do you think is steamdeck or bazzite
Which part of "some more" you didn't read
Only for portables.
yes, most common usecase :D I belive this will pave future for also other
Seconded! I want to explore these options, because I'm done with MS
It would be more interesting than the Apple gaming testing
It’s great for accessibility. It’s bad they’re trying so hard to make up reasons for the AI bubble with everything though. It’s all about shoving AI down our throats.
God, every time I feel I should be pushing myself onto Linux harder and harder. I really need to make the jump at some point and eff it all...
Texting took off massively in the UK cos people didn't even want to talk to the people they knew when they could quickly write something. Even when they had to pay for every single message. The idea we'd voluntarily chat to our PCs doesn't understand what people are actually like.
Pervasive: "(especially of an unwelcome influence or physical effect) spreading widely throughout an area or a group of people.". I'm not sure they meant to use that word, my first thought was also FFS. Still using 10.
If you ask a Gen Xer in the early 90s their wet dream is voice-only computer interaction.
All that remains to be fixed in Linux to be a valid replacement of Windows for PC gaming is performance when using raytracing, which is quite poor from my tests a few weeks ago (on latest version of Bazzite OS).
I don’t have any complaint regarding HDR in Bazzite, but it’s true that it was an issue with my previous attempt on a more standard distribution.
There is also HDR, which is a huge deal to some (including me). I do wonder if Nvidia will ever work on Linux drivers or if they are too financially integrated with Microsoft now in the AI bubble.
That's what Satya is doing isn't it. Speaking to AI day and night.
A lot of Linux comments in here, an OS that I love, but hardware manufacturers will never support it. Even with the success of Steamdeck, you see that Nadella and other bigbrain CEOs would rather drive all their companies into the ground rather than make a useful product. This is just capitalism.
They're going to make you like it.
People need to stop using Windows at all
Data vampires want everything they can get
Sci-fi movies that presented shit like this as cool have a lot to answer for...
So you’re saying that we’ll soon get to live in this reality? youtu.be/maAFcEU6atk?...
When your users actively talk to your system - it's easier to train voice AI
15 years of Alexa and Siri, only used it to program the alarm clock.
Well. I ask it the weather forecast. That’s about it.
Same. And even then siri is dumb as shit and seems to be getting slower and dumber by the day
I have a location I go to nearly every week, which is in my calendar. When I ask Siri for the map route, it says "what would you like to know about [place]?" When I answer "How to get there," it says "How to get where?"
kinect will never die, just the form it takes to ruin our day
At this point they are just doing what the crypto-investors want them to do.
The engineers left Microsoft, now they are all the crypto-sudden-millionaire leading the company. Windows 7 and the Xbox 360 were the swan song of Microsoft.
