Does this trigger a memory for anyone else?
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
They’re not gonna release a game that doesn’t work right
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Who wrote this lmao. What a dumb headline.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Dude, I don't even know what to say man. This is just painful to read. If you ever fly into Germany, beers on me. Been too long, man, and I hate that you had to suffer like this.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Not currently, no. They should add that.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s why they said, if it had been built for Switch 2 from beginning, things could be different. The cards are definitely a lot slower in our tests but that was based on loading times. This seems like an issue with streaming.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Dunno if that supports 32:9. You could instant hits use Mame
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't remember how far I got. I did not finish it. It's just that, with each session, I didn't feel like I really made any progress. It just kept going and looking the same. Coming off Monster Boy, which just continously throws new, insanely cool things at you for its entire run-time, it bored me
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Honestly, and this sucks, I do kinda get it. To match other consoles, they needed storage that was fast like a modern SSD, right? The cost on that stuff has not come down like the flash memory used for SW1 games. I think they probably did what they could and, even still, those carts cost $23 a piece
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah, OK, so I -was- right then. I had a feeling that might be the case given the amount of streaming going on in that game/engine and based on results we saw with other Switch 2 cart games.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I need to try RenoDX. Is that run through Reshade?
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Main issue is that the scenery basically never changed and the game became a repetitive slog. It never felt like you were going anywhere and I didn’t like the run cycle.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Ok, I was cold on Hollow Knight but Silksong seems to support uncapped frame-rates and ultrawide on PC so I may have to give it a shot. It’s rare to have that in a side scroller.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Hopefully it is better though, is what I’m saying!
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think it's peak of the genre, though. It has a lot of issues. Maybe this new one has solved them? It was good, I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I played it around the same time I played Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom and found the latter to be such a dramatically better game that it soured me on HK (too repetitive, very samey visuals, 'flash-like' animation etc). However, I might give the new one a shot.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
This is more like Flashback/Prince of Persia style
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d love to understand how they pulled this off. Was Hollow Knight really that popular? I feel like I’m missing something as someone that didn’t really like it. Wonder if this is worth checking out?
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
This is actually quite cool! Been playing it myself and the vibes are excellent.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Man. I hope this is Tengo Project’s next game. Shatterhand is a top 3 NES game for me. It’s that good. Bringing this back the way those guys always do. My goodness.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah exactly. I did feel comfortable when I jumped to a 77" TV as it's large enough to display the game at a good size but otherwise it's usually too small.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
First thought
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Well heck, if you're saying this, that means I need to give this a try. Looks sick.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha ha, seriously, it lets me toggle it just fine initially at boot but after a minute is starts to have issues. So it seems like something is loading that is breaking that part of Windows. I just can’t figure out what given what I know does startup.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Weird issue with Windows 11 lately - when toggling HDR, it causes Windows to appear frozen but they're still active in the background and the mouse moves. If I unplug and replug the monitor, it comes back. I've tried DDU, among other things, and cannot figure out what's going on here.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, we haven't seen any other games on card that were designed for fast storage yet. Still, they're probably just being cheap.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha ha it did not run at 5 fps
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Aw man I figured it was too big but you’re right, it would fit. They cheaped out. The only possible other explanation is speed? Cards are a lot slower and that could cause problems for a game designed for SSD loading. Internal and SD cards are way faster.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Finally! Eight Days is being realized with 007 First Light! The PS3 dream is not dead!
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Sadly, what other option was there in this case?
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
They fixed the stealth issues, thankfully, and it's much better now.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not sure that's the case - the pre-release footage -WAS- actually really bad. It's just that, in a rare twist, they genuinely improved it.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely not. People were just guessing based on the initial poor trailers (which did look bad) but the final game is super impressive. It's a remarkable port.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
I know Oliver is working on a video but I've also played a bit and, man, this is insanely impressive. It's doing more than expected - cutbacks are there but, honestly, it's legit with a nice suite of RT features intact. Amazing work from Ubi here (it's also a solid game)
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Gosh, I just hope they can follow through and deliver on the final game. I loved what I played but, well, sticking the landing is tough! Here's hoping!
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
"What about standing upright? Surely it could do that" You COULD do that...in the same way that you can choose NOT to use a wrist-strap for a Wii-mote (not that anyone would do that, goodness me).
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
This is pretty cool. I, uh, started by making a networked maze game on a TI-83 calculator that we could play in class. Started with TI-Basic then figured out assembly code - which wasn't that hard on TI-83 as there aren't that many instructions.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure but this isn't a contest.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Not this DF
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Way beyond that - I was inside adjusting rings, realigning the yoke etc. Much improved but there's a wave/sag in the middle that I cannot fix.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Right. All Sony CRTs from the 80s and up have RGB SCART in Europe
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I think both flat and curved tubes can have geometry issues once you get to 27" and beyond but the flat nature of the Wega glass seems to accentuate the issue making distortions way more visible in side scrolling games.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
What are your feelings on Sony Wega versus older Trinitron models? Specifically, consumer TVs. I'm juggling one of each right now and while I love the vibrancy of the Wega, the geometry issues seem impossible to fully solve. The normal Trinitron (29X5D) overall feels more suitable for games.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Interesting
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Pump was the real business
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
I just realized that shoes have taken the spot left by old boom boxes and mini-stereos. Ya know “Mega Bass”, “ w00x”, “X-bass” and the like.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh no

John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh for sure, it's obviously just a halo product where they were given infinite budget to make whatever they wanted. Still, I'm curious to hear some high-end electrostatic headphones for myself.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I was there like 20 years ago, in fact!😆
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh just €89,000!
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Loaded up Space Marine 2 on a whim and, yep, still opens on the wrong monitor but you at least get a peak below the menu lol.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
It has constant screen tearing instead. I would say the console version isn’t really worth playing for me due to weird decisions they’ve made.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
I concur. As I said last year, this is such a great remake. Worth supporting!
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
This is why I think id has been so great over the past decade - they made three Doom games but each one is so completely different yet all are amazing. Naturally, this means everyone will have a different favorite but I love seeing different visions of what Doom can be.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
This is the most 'Jeff Chen' setup I've seen this year and I love it.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
I know, it's weird, but it's technically a PS4 port which was enhanced over PS Vita (it wasn't PSP). The PS Vita version ran at 30 fps with a very low resolution as well, though. Switch targets 60 fps though the OG Switch can't deliver.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Worth mentioning here - maybe they'll improve it but, with the Japanese release that I played, the frame-rate is very unstable on a normal Switch but flawless on Switch 2. So it's definitely best played on a Switch 2 if jumping in.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
It's because of Unreal Engine
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Actually, id Software did a great post on this (lightmaps) and why they're not as viable any longer and wouldn't have been viable for Doom The Dark Ages. I suspect something similar here.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Right but it looks awful. They did nothing to account for that. They just stripped it back to the bare minimum. I would say all console versions of this game are a mess - their vision didn't play nicely with any of them.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Both modes!
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
This really sucks to see.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah which is so weird and a bummer. It also has no v-sync.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Here's the video, by the way. Such a strange port. Would love to know WHY they made these choices. Series S has Switch 1 port vibes going on lol. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-10...
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Oliver just dropped his Wukong Xbox video and the results are some of the strangest I've ever seen. They made completely different decisions including just ripping out Lumen entirely in most modes. This is what happens when you remove RT (Lumen is a form of RT) lighting in a game designed for it.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Problem is, it takes a while to make one like I wanted to and I can only start on release so the video would come out late and likely do poor. :-/
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Great to see! Can't wait to play this one! Had wanted to make a video on it like I did for Streets of Rage 4 but, alas, too late I guess! Excited to pick it up later this week!
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
I played a lot of Silent Hill f today and I really love it thus far. It’s quite different but has its own unique feel that I dig. The atmosphere is thick and the visuals stunning.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh for sure. People get very defensive. For me, pointing out flaws is something that goes hand in hand with caring about an experience as well but folks see it only as a negative thing.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
For me, the worst thing is people believing the only thing we do is talk about frame-rates. I’ve spent so much time crafting multi-hour love letters to classic games and showcasing what makes modern games tick and yet posts like this ignore all that and focus on this one tiny aspect. :-(
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Seems they don’t even watch most of the content if that’s all they think we do.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
As a Cincinnatian, you just got me thinking about Skyline chili covered in nuclear orange cheese. It’s basically the curry rice of America.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
It did have some games...but very very few. Highlander is probably a highlight as it's a pre-rendered background polygon character based action adventure derived from Highlander: The Animated Series
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s why I made this
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
They’re not wrong. It’s arguably the least reliable CD player ever made.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Sadly the game’s HUD is 4:3 only and stretches itself so it looks terrible.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
I think I prefer the shiny plastic dudes in idTech4 games to the stuff we saw in early UE3 titles. They have a precision to them that I can dig.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
These Doom 3 engine games are pretty much designed for giant OLED monitors. Those pitch black shadows really shine on this screen. Just awesome looking.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah they made such an awesome portable engine with lots of content...but nothing to do
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Ya know, the one thing I don't like about Gears of War 2 is that it's almost too good. 😅
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
On top of all the non-appealing ideas here what the heck is it with Microsoft and voice? Like, stop it. Nobody wants to talk to their PC all day. This is a terrible vision of the future and I hope they do not take this path.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Whelp, PS5 version it is! It'll look and run better anyways.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Ohh right! Good point.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
It’s interesting how they added this menu to the original Unreal in a patch as well which replaced the original menu system. I can’t recall any other instance of a games UI being completely ripped out and replaced.
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
OK, putting this on my short list to try
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social)
Loaded up Gears Ultimate Edition on Xbox to capture in preperation for the upcoming Gears Reloaded and, uh, I couldn't resist making this lol (turn on sound)
John Linneman (@dark1x.bsky.social) reply parent
Wow, that's an amazing find

Fun little exercise. Was still in France back in 2015 there. Added beard and weight since then. :\
