At the very least, graduate from high school
At the very least, graduate from high school
These 1/4th have graduated from high school,or at least some of them have While dropout rates have been rising, schools and districts have lowered their standards that kids who can't read can still graduate It's only ever been a D average to graduate from most places, and getting a D is easier now
Jesus Christ, y'all, stop reinventing the poll tax and support basic adult education
This. My high school's funding was absolutely gutted and I was part of a generation of teens who absolutely suffered for it. We need blue to give so many fucks about getting better education to ALL parts of the country - including red states. It's how we'll help prevent this from happening again.
Absolutely. Ban charter schools & deeply regulate homeschooling. I saw home schooled kids out playing all day Friday.
Very of the opinion you need at least a basic teaching degree to homeschool or else it's considered a form of neglect. I've spoken to a number of adults who feel like they've been hampered in their daily life by being homeschooled by parents without the proper credentials to teach anything.
I have a PhD (not in ed) and an MA in education and I did not feel qualified to homeschool. Nothing in my education addressed how to teach how to read or do math. More than that, watching my kid hug teachers at graduation, I could never fulfill all the social-emotional needs on my own.
On of the best things for kids to have is an adult outside of their parents/primary caregivers with whom they have a positive relationship. Our current socio-economic structure makes that very difficult outside of the context of schools.
And, for real, my kid had some fantastic HS teachers at his *public school.*
I get there are extreme cases where a child's health (including mental health) or the social dynamics at a school make homeschooling the best of bad options. But the vast majority of homeschoolers I have known did it so they could isolate their children in the name of "protection."
I had homeschooled teen girls babysit for us and they were not allowed to walk the half block home in our extraordinarily safe neighborhood and mom drove them to and from community college after HS.
One of the worst examples of this is a friend of mine from Sri Lanka (so a Muslilm) who is married to a MAGA (born again Christian) who out of nowhere became interested in homeschooling her kids. She left work and became a homeschooler. Her MAGA husband is a prepper who has all the MAGA paranoia.
He hates public education but... he teaches at a public school. So he wants to protect his kids from teachers like himself. It is truly bizarre.
One of the greatest benefits in my young life was good teachers. My kindergarten teacher broke through my fear of being left with other children and helped me make friends. My 4th grade teacher recognized I had symptoms of ADHD and depression and it's why I was able to get treatment. 1/2
My local history teacher is why I'm so passionate about learning about peoples' cultures, histories, languages and more. And countless teachers who showed me learning could be fun, crafted me into someone hungry for knowledge. I'll forever be grateful to them. I love them. 2/2
Go for it
They should require high school transcripts, 2.5 avg or 3.0 in history/social studies to vote.
