One method for doing this is to run for prime minister while Medvedev keeps the seat warm for two terms as you winky wink your way past the two term limit

Project 2025 will eliminate him long before he gets there; once he is no longer useful or gets in the way. Vance is the future, stupid, easy, and controllable. That's why he is there. Trump was necessary to get here, but once a liability, is easily discarded.
If we keep following the script from It Can't Happen Here, he'll be in jail before 2028...and it'll be Republicans that put him there.
That worked in Russia because they had renewable term limits. The 22nd amendment is not renewable.
Truly remarkable how news outlets won't cover this story as "Putin does a Medvedev on the Potomac" but awaiting the "JD Vance runs for President with Trump as VP, and after Vance wins Trump stays in the Oval Office as president emeritus plus remember former Pope Benedict still ran the show" stories.
Where's the story saying "a different big federation had a two term limit the president blew past: here's how that panned out for everyone"
If JD won the presidency then the only way his VP takes over is if prez JD falls out a window.
Down a marble staircase buried in a Golf course
Why go even that far? Just use last cycle's playbook: States try to stop him Roberts says only Congress can stop him, due to stray comma or whatever Congress does nothing, silently assuming the electorate will stop him Electorate doesn't stop him
Technically- he did say he was in power for the entire time Joe Biden was in office - so this is actually his third term.
This hinges on him trusting Vance and Vance being trustworthy
But the Ru constitution had at least words like "two ***consecutive*** terms," which the 22nd amendment doesn't (as far as I recall). This would be more like the time they "nullified" Putin's terms the second time
Yes that's based on the 22nd amendment talking about being elected president rather than being qualified to serve and qualification for VP is about the office not election. It was a strange drafting choice. If we had a reasonable supreme Court I'd be confidence they would laugh that bullshit out but
That said I don't think Trump would want to do that and trust JD or anyone else to hand over the office once they won
Just mainly want folks to recognize the story is "trump wants to do dictator shit like other dictators do" and not "wow if we turn the constitution upside down and read it through a kaleidoscope maybe he *can* run for life'
Honestly, it’s becoming ever clearer that, with a constitution as vague as the US has, you can have even a hardcore authoritarian system without really having to change it.
The constitution did nothing (on its own) to stop a 100 year apartied state from operating in the US. Seems more or less custom made for a despot, tbh
The genius of the US Constitution is outsourcing oppression to the states
Great take
Americans could be under the crudest despotism and still be, “are we approaching a constitutional crisis??”
The US Constitution had a great run, but its weaknesses right now are painfully clear…
The bit that kills me here is that this isn't even the stuff it's vague about. Like it's an epidemic of people squinting past the words to make them mean the opposite of what they say
The religious nuts at the heart of this 2025 bullshit are adept at this kaleidoscope crap. Look how Christlike
Hitler didn’t change the Weimar constitution much. He just ignored it and people let him.
100%
Or is he just trying to forestall the inevitable 2028 successor talk by trying to freeze the budding race for as long as he can? Nobody will even hint they are putting the hat in the ring while this "third term" narrative dominates. But yes, this is straight up the Putin president for life playbook.
He may not be elected to a third term in office as President (22nd amdt.). He may not be elected to any term in office as a Vice President (12th amdt.). He may not be appointed to any term in office as Vice President (12th amdt.).
I’m gonna start investing in companies that make rope.
anything to swerve the news cycle and conversation away from putting the lives of US enlisted at risk by holding a highly classified level conversation on a signal app without checking to see who was in the chat. talk about anything but that, america.
trump's attorneys argued (orally) to the Colorado supreme court that a presidential candidate RUNNING FOR A 3RD TERM should NOT be taken off the ballot. Whether or not it's the 3rd term should not be up to a bureaucrat, but up to the people. ⤵️
We all know Trump's first term "didn't count" because of the "Russia hoax". It's much more likely that Don Jr will run and don Sr's office will be oval.
Agreed. Trump very likely won't try what I outline for a 3rd term, but will have a puppet president and trump will keep his oval office. bsky.app/profile/pwna...
Ah, I thought this sounded familiar.
Dude’s gonna die one day right?
Any day now.
The walls are closing in.
Why do you care? We have far more pressing issues to deal with right now. If he gets away with the shit he's doing right now, the consititution, along with the term limit, is immaterial. This is a dumb distration
I don't think he would accept anything less than retaining the title of President. Whatever way he gets it would be fine but he doesn't just want the power, he wants the prestige too.
He runs as Vance’s veep and JD sheepishly (of course) resigns
And they *campaign* on this
The French have a much better method involving some carpentry and a small amount of metalwork
This has obviously been the plan all along. No one should be surprised.
Nobody is surprised
If he lives that long, THAT would surprise me. Some people react to these "Trump wants to dictator for life" stories like the mf'er isn't a fat sweaty 78 year old who looks like Vincent D'Onofrio's Men In Black character in orange greasepaint and sounds like Abe Freaking Simpson 2/3 of the time.
Lisa Murkowski is surprised
It's weird, trump probably won't live much longer and musk is the shadow president, it makes sense musk would take putin's position and Republicans front another guy but nobody else has trump's untouchability.
I've always thought he'd just have a wink-wink deal where he says he's going to be whoever's "Chief of Staff." Not on the ticket, not Senate confirmable, but obviously still acting as head of state.
Don’t forget the transferring of powers from the presidency, to the prime ministers office, and then back again
I hope the protest voters enjoyed giving the finger to Harris because that's probably going to be the last federal election
Everyone is assuming that there will be an election and that Trump will have to work within some existing rules … There are no rules that can contain Trump’s lawlessness.
Even Russia and Belarus still have elections. "Are there still elections" is the wrong metric, and in any case not something you need to wait to see if it happens.
Did Putin even change physical during that?
or you run as the VP and get your stooge President to resign immediately
Or he just announces his candidacy for a third term. The GOP will nominate him, unopposed, by acclimation. SCOTUS has already ruled that states may not enforce constitutional eligibility rules by denying ballot access absent an act of Congress. So he’ll be on the ballot in every state.
If Trump argues that the 22nd Amendment only applies to "consecutive" terms, then I look forward to Trump v. Obama in 2028.
Seeking a 3rd term vs running for a 3rd term are not the same thing. Wondering if Trump steps down before 2 yrs, JD takes over, and then Trump runs again in 2028. 10 yr limit applies to POTUS serving. A big risk, but this guy thinks he can win anything with $$ from billionaires.
One problem is that SCOTUS said that candidates who are disqualified constitutionally must be allowed to be on the ballot again. So, even if it’s clearly unconstitutional, SCOTUS has greenlit it.
Much more likely there will be a puppet candidate & trump will keep his oval office. bsky.app/profile/pwna...
