I love the notion that PhD level experts are easily tricked if questions get very specific. But also, his prompt doesn't sound too specific to me, nor do I see where it would have necessarily tricked a LLM into 'ignoring energy other than solar'. His request included longwave, which is not solar.

Here’s another attempt — if you prompt the model to “find” a diagram (using a question I might ask of my non-major undergrads) it does ok acting as an expensive search engine, but its offer to synthesize what it finds does not turn out well.

Find a diagram of earth's energy balance, labeling flows in watts per square meter and distinguishing between shortwave and long wave flows. Thought for 18s › 342 W m Reflected by Clouds (78 350 Here you go — four clear diagrams of Earth's energy (radiation) budget that label flows in W•m-? and separate shortwave (solar) vs longwave (thermal) radiation. Key numbers (global, area-averaged): • Incoming solar at top of atmosphere (TOA): ~342 W•m 2. This is the solar shortwave energy incident on Earth averaged over the whole globe. • Of that ~342 W•m 2: about 100 W•m-2 is reflected back to spy (clouds + atmosphere + surfac..eflectivity), and Which would you prefer? (I can make a printable figure for you right away.) 凸 Sources Clean printable diagram

I sometimes read the text "answer" the AI offers, but I never believe it. As I explained in another convo on this topic, while one context-rich AI search uses 10X as much energy as a regular search via optimized indexing, I usually get to the right sources with one query, as opposed to 10 or 15.

Plain old search works pretty well in this case.

Did you turn off all the AI features of Duck Duck Go? Some are default. You have to go to Settings on their website.

Didn’t know until you mentioned that I could filter out AI images, but I do have it not pop up AI summaries by default.
