I'm sometimes amazed at what bullshit people will hallucinate in order to hate others. Recently blocked someone who claimed that a person who was harassed off twitter a while ago was *actually a cis man* even though they were a nonbinary person who was afab. Fucking wild.
I really wish people could just realize that they don't have to LIKE everyone - you can just DISLIKE someone - without massive amounts of recreational character assassination. You don't need to look into their background or keep "receipts" on random people and monster them at every opportunity.
tbf I keep a lot of receipts & documentation (I'm one of those people who screenshots damn near everything & tells myself I'll look at it later but almost never does) but it's more of a "if I don't have evidence this thing happened nobody will believe me & the people involved actively lie about it"

On the flipside of that - disagreeing with someone isn't attacking them personally or some form of bigotry. It's like half the internet can't tell the difference - even a little bit.
They just smell blood in the water and lose all perspective. Then post-rationalize their actions in order to feel better about them - by - as you said - making shit up. Most of which isn't even any of their fucking business. It's so weird.
someday I'll do a write-up on the psychological gymnastics they do to justify it to themselves bc one thing I have learned, in speaking with a handful of people from that sphere, is that they do really believe they're justified and doing the right thing.
or, they think whatever they're doing isn't actually all that bad compared to whatever somebody else is doing. but generally people don't sit with cognitive dissonance very well. it's hard to be a consciously bad person, hence why people justify things to themselves or rationalize it away
Or, not making stuff up, but engaging in some weird form of collective punishment. Like, someone seriously posted a video of someone half my age doing something cringey - and took ME to task for it because we're both nonbinary. Just weird-ass behavior.
