I honestly think when older people say "10 years ago," they a lot of times just mean the 1990s because everything since 2000 seems more like the same time period.

I remember people wearing MJ 23 jerseys like crazy before Kobe. Duh. They gave dude his own brand at Nike & it’s still the most iconic sports brand there is, at least for hoops. The key point is, no one wore jerseys as casual & workwear until Gen X. Hip hop plays a big role in that.

If you look at Riley-era Madison Square Garden and any post-2000 photos it’s striking how few people were wearing sports jerseys or team merch. Now people wear it on the street, to work, at home, etc…

I was at 2011 Timberwolves games where there were more KG Celtics jerseys than Twolves jerseys combined and where Kobe got MVP chants on the road. Linsanity happened less than 15 years ago. Cuban is being grumpy.

the mass introduction of high speed internet to everyone in the 2000s was the turning point - that way you could search view consume clips content on just a single player - tv viewers of a prior vintage were relegated to just view teams when they appeared on tv or in person.
