Donald Trump is once again threatening to issue an executive order targeting voting. This is an effort to subvert the Constitution and the 2026 election, which grants states and Congress but not the president power to regulate federal elections. If he does this, we will sue and we will win (again).

If the EO issues instructions to anyone who is not an employee of the federal executive branch, it violates the constitution. Elections are run by state governments. The president cannot issue orders to them.

Forcing people to vote in person creates a choke point where people can be intimidated from voting. This is why we can expect to see Trump rolling out aggressive and armed federal agents and military to blue cities before next year’s election. But that only works if people cannot vote by mail.

I’m all for voter ID and vote verification services in every state. But first, there must be a bipartisan, simple, free, fast voter ID system in place for every eligible voter in our country. And by eligible, I mean “right to vote”, not “can pass the test” of voter suppression tactics.
Oregon ticks those boxes and has had mail-in-voting for 20 years. Voter ID is issued to state drivers license or state issued ID. We have the option to register to vote when the ID is issued. Ballots are scrupulously verified.
Close but not good enough unless getting an ID is free, fast and simple for EVERY eligible voter. Otherwise, it’s voter suppression by making it harder for low wage, unemployed, and homeless people to acquire an ID.
IMO the government should give every citizen a free US passport on their 18th birthday and free renewals therafter. If they did something like that, voter ID would be no issue
