I mean, they basically stated a null hypothesis. If you want it stated accurately in common parlance we have no evidence that there are environmental causes of autism.

The best I've heard is maybe there's some kind of link between the gut biome and mental health, but the last I read about it, it was very tenuous and needed a lot of experimentation.

There’s been a number of studies that have linked heavy metals, air pollution and pesticides to an increased risk of autism. Genetics is by far the largest factor but there are environmental and societal factors as well.
