Pike always takes a backseat in these episodes and it's as if Kirk is the captain of the Enterprise...I mean let's face it...he's on the ship every chance he gets...

They're certainly leaning into the building of the friendship between him and Scotty.
That's certainly true. It just feels like Pike—as awesome as he is— has not been prominently featured in my opinion other than the premiere of season 1 as well as the end of the season 1 with "A Quality of Mercy".
True. I think that's a danger when it comes to having such a large ensemble cast. Is it bad that I also preferred when he was just a little bit angsty about his eventual fate?
You're absolutely right! The cast is large and with only 10 episodes a season, it's tough to do justice to everyone. Like an episode featuring Ortegas' brother could have been taken away and just focus on the alien creature. No, not at all! I feel the writers let that fall off the wayside.
I like Beto, but you're right. He isn't strictly necessary for advancing any storylines, apart from the excellent "What Is Starfleet?". We could have focused more on the core ensemble, especially, as you say, there's only 10 episodes.
I like Beto as well! Yeah, I feel we could have had his episode much earlier in the season. From the end of the episode, it looked as if he was leaving the Enterprise. I guess he just decided to spend the rest of his time with her. I mean, obviously, he can't stay on much longer as TOS happens.
So agreed. Would have been so much stronger to give him the time earlier and then have it pass, rather than as an also-ran later in the series.
