"Molasses to Rum to Slaves," from the musical 1776 explains it all.
Two recent works: Seth Rockman's "Plantation Goods," and John Bardes' "The Carceral City," are a fine set of companion readings on the deep regional inter-connections and continuities of ante-bellum Northern & Southern commercial and criminal justice systems. Can't recommend them highly enough.
The difference is that most northerners will admit the north had its hands dirty with slavery. They won't admit it still does, but they'll admit it used to. There's a zillion assholes in the south who still insist slavery was good for black people b/c it "got them out of Africa." 🙄

Originally Bristol RI was the most prosperous city in America, and it was entirely due to the slave trade coming through there.
Back in the original Bristol, UK, they get SO mad when you remind em what made this place rich
They're not exactly thrilled about it in Rhode Island, either. But nobody denies it. Everyone is like "holy shit! That's fucking awful!" Nobody will admit that there's a much more subtle, more economic form of slavery going on right now, of course. They get VERY upset if you talk about that.
