In hearing a discussion about death photos in Appalachia, this idea of having no other memories come up. It may seem ghastly today, but taking a photo of a loved one in their coffin was going to be the last photo you get, and it may be the only photo you get of that individual.

We have at least one in our possession, a cousin who died hundreds of miles away, so the rest of the family couldn't be there for the visitation/funeral. So someone took a photo and sent it so everyone had that last image to remember him by.
