I suggested to a friend that her son might not recognize this furniture. Then because of cultural differences I realised she herself might not. And indeed, she didn't. Do YOU know what it is?? What use do you think we could put it to, now that it's original purpose is defunct.

selection of photos of furniture with a small low connected chair and table where the table has a shelf, drawer or cupboard section.

gossip seats? I’ve got a friend who uses one as a laptop desk (granted she is bisexual and sits like one)

I did think if you could put one of those rotating desktops like the school chair things into the table bit they'd possibly make a laptop desk or something... Or a desk lamp and under the stairs as a reading nook for a kid...

I’d personally love one as a breastfeeding nook, shelf for my drink and drawer for all my snacks

Telephone table / seat? And the obvious use is in a hallway wheee it always was? As somewhere to sit and tie your laces, store keys etc?

Good point - shoe store underneath, door debris in the drawer (keys, clothes brush, umbrella...) and a place to put the bag when you come in, place to tie shoes on the way out... I like..

This is the way. A very practical piece of furniture.

The drawer was likely for storing the telephone book and yellow pages.

It's for when you're using a landline phone, especially if you're a woman wanting a natter.

Are we only doing funny answers? Because I’m old and know what this is. Funny answer: cat seat, with handy drawer for keeping the brush etc handy. Which is now a good use for these as the original purpose has become untethered…

I dunno, I was asking in seriousness but generally accept funny answers... Actually a pet bed isn't a bad idea... I kinda need one beside my desk that my dog can use... but he'd need steps too...

I don't think I've ever seen one of these before either - perhaps it's an Irish speciality (I'm presuming Kate Watson is right in suggesting that it's for holding a phone with directories in the drawer)

My mom (USian) has one. We've had it since before I was born so I don't know where she got it

We still have one in the hallway. It's useful for sitting on to put your shoes on.

Indeed, it was in the living room near the hallway to the front door, so you've probably sat on it too. :-)

Don't think latitude enters into it? The houses in the village I grew up in were large enough to have a non tiny hallway so that helps.

Reading corner. Drawer for books, place for your teacup. The chair made for socializing with others now evolves into a place for delicious solitude.
