If you’re targeted, finding a safe path is prudent. Given the state of the world, I feel like going anywhere won’t solve the problem. People seem generally resentful of immigrants many places these days sadly.

I disagree. When Ukrainian refugees fled their country, they were accepted with open arms across Europe. The same parties that called for a stop to accepting refugees took them in. Rebecca would have an easy time migrating. Maybe bot everyone though

Like most places though, even EU countries are hard to move to. You need a job offer first and then you usually need to pay nearly a thousand euros to apply for a visa. Low skill workers have little chance. It’s not necessarily easy. It helps to have family there. Might still be worth it for some.

These days I feel like I’m always reading it, and I totally agree about Canada right now. I’m apprehensive though because anti-immigration parties seem to be on the rise, and until the trend stops I’d be afraid one election might see like UK reform or AfD come to power or some equivalent.

Even Canada's immigration skeptical party still wants an immigration level that's higher per capita than the US Also a simple change in leadership could easily flip that. The previous leader was pro immigration

I think it’s fair to say much of the world population is hostile to refugees (being a subset of immigrants). One of our potential ways out of the US is our connections to Ireland, which very recently had violent demonstrations against immigrants. Still, better than this regime.

While any far-right activity should be taken very seriously - as we know it's a cancer that can spread easily in the right conditions. But I would caution you not to get carried away by clickbait headlines re: far-right sentiment in Ireland. In reality, in the recent general election, far right...

Can’t argue that. I just think everything is so in flux that if you told me in 4 years both countries were in opposite situations I wouldn’t be shocked. I think of you had a chance to live and work in Ireland that be a cool experience though.

I have close family there, and for the most part I speak the dominant language, and perhaps most importantly, that’s a way into the EU. There are other EU countries that just straight-up sell citizenship, though at those prices, it’s hardly ideal.

We’re a gay couple, so we’re certainly on the list somewhere. We’re fortunate in some other ways that we may find it easier than others to get to safety. My husband has a PhD in a STEM field, for example, which I know not everybody has.
