i have literally heard nothing whatsoever absolutely Hispanic men and why they flipped so hard to Trump.
i have literally heard nothing whatsoever absolutely Hispanic men and why they flipped so hard to Trump.
it’s mostly that the spanish language media environment pre-election was absolutely rancid, like ten or twenty times worse than the english one (which was already very bad). lots of outright, insane lies.
claro, porque no preguntas en el idioma correcto
soy gringo, mi español es mierde
What's the equivalent of a small town Iowa diner for Hispanic men, and how do we airdrop the NYT in to learn their platitudes?
taqueria in el paso next to a pentecostal church is really the only way to achieve the delusion that you're seeing the people in the raw in the same way
Herbalife smoothie club
So accurate it hurts
an asada in your tio’s backyard
Machismo vs. lady president
i seem to remember some anecdotes from floridians about the spanish media environment swelling with right-populist nonsense. they may have just been hit with the fascism conversation ray that's been working its way through everyone else
Well the fascism has been present in that Florida community for a while, from my understanding
wasn't one of the stories that Hispanic media in general was an uncontested hotbed of Republican propaganda, or was that mostly a Florida thing in Cuban and Venezuelan areas
I think they have agency and you can draw the same conclusions from their behavior as you can the common gabacho
I think by 2020 there was some "Hispanic men like the macho style" based less in any research than stereotyping? Also for Hispanic voters more broadly RW influence on Spanish language media has been a talking point for quite some time, even if it's more niche than discourse on non-Hispanic voters.
being on good old fashioned sexism
I don't know for sure re: 2024 but I had an immigrant Hispanic coworker in 2020 who told me the GOP was going straight to Spanish-speaking people through WhatsApp and Pennysavers and &c with just outright propaganda, with absolutely no attempt by Dems to offer alternative, let alone fire back.
I'll add to this that I suspect a lot of these people are not nearly as committed to the GOP as many of their white counterparts, a >20% swing the other way wouldn't surprise me if the GOP tanks the economy and Dems bother to speak directly to them in their own language and actually play to win.
One thing I keep saying is that there was a lot of anticapitalist talk from the left. A drumbeat of Republicans saying the dems were communists combined might have swung people fleeing communism. Venezuelans and Cubans in particular. Bukele and Mike I probably also swayed some of the crypto types
What about Gallego's "every Latino man wants a big-ass truck?"
If my father in law is any indication: It's Whatsapp group chats full of right wing conspiracy theories and outright lieis about democrats and their policies. JAJAJA Los democratos pedofilos 🫵🤣🤣🤣
But since the claims are false, I'd figured no one would believe them unless they were already predisposed to hate Dems. You might blindly believe a lie that your high school bully who doodled swastikas had grown up to become a serial killer. I don't think you'd blindly believe your best friend did.
Maybe Hispanic voters who were already GOP or Hispanic nonvoters could be swayed by those claims, but why would a Hispanic Dem voter believe them? If they were previously voting for Dems, they probably didn't outright hate the party.
The thing I know for certain is that liberals seem far more interested in projecting their weird and frequently racist theories onto Latinos than actually trying to understand this I’m surprised nobody has suggested we’re just drawn to the candidate most resembling a Doritos Locos® taco
Not everything but Dems shat the bed on Spanish language outreach
...and countering right-wing Spanish language disinformation
Has anyone anywhere done a great job countering disinformation? It seems like a pervasive problem
Probably depends on how you define "countering" and "great job." But the Democrats effectively ceded the entire Spanish language media ecosystem to the Right during the last few elections, and Spanish-speaking Democrats have been pointing this out to the party to no avail.
And if you aren't putting your own propaganda out there, then you're definitely not going to counter anything.
Best guess and ai agrees: That generation considers themselves (effectively) “white” and are culturally patriarchal and religious. Above average anti-black racism too. Harris was poison for them. To really know we would need to resurrect cultural anthropology.
People forget Hillary put up great Hispanic numbers (63% in Miami-Dade!) I think a big piece is Trump was seen as a huge threat to the community but ended up not doing much and the economy finally picked up. Part of this was return to form and a belief that it wouldn't be that bad after 2016.
We should be trying to understand there media choices - not their microeconomics. Who were they listening to. Why?
Biden failing to message on immigration while opening the taps a little sent all the wrong messages too. It created inter-national strife without a "this is what our country is forged from message" which allowed the "they'll only deport the bad people" to land like a Rorschach test
Disagree. Work and live in a Hispanic community. Lotta Hispanic immigrants just wanted to pull the ladder up behind them.
As always you gotta draw a contrast and never accept your enemy's framing, this should be a formative political lesson for any national level pol in any democracy in the world
The post-COVID conspiracism was much less clamped down on outside of English too, and this was especially true in audio media. The "Dem Joe Rogan" problem was 10x bigger in Spanish. I'd guess only ~30% of who we're talking about at the ballot box use Spanish daily, but that media sets the tableau
I've got a lot more contact into the Salvadoreño context than others, but Bukele as a figure and symbol can't be ignored. Milei is Bukele for white people
this is depressingly plausible
This is where there's a solid basis for hope of snapback, because Trump's policies are now "ICE going whole hog on terrorizing Latinos broadly" and "nuking the economy from orbit, especially Latino-heavy sectors like construction and tourism"
Honestly the only Latinos he might not have completely fallen off the cliff with is “border Latinos who work with Borden Patrol” and even they might be feeling a pinch with Mexican trade being fucked with
Indeed. And I get the sense that CBP is generally less fascist than ICE.
The former is institutionalized; the latter has been explicitly made into stormtroopers.
I don’t think they’re less fascistic (aren’t they the ones who lassoed Haitians a few years ago?) but they are smart enough to not just hunt down random Latinos at the local Home Depot
if polls are correct, approvals w/ latino and afr am have taken a huge beating the last few months. it is amazing to me how much the nj and va dem gov campaigns seems to be on autopilot.
Many Mexican men I talked to before the election liked him bc he was manly. Seriously. That seemed to be the whole deal. He was rich and manly and talked shit about a lot of people. They are less pleased now, at least the ones I've personally talked to.
Trump's spanish language ads unfortunately go too hard.
