What fucks me up is that I’m a white person whose parents are from South Dakota, but grew up in Hawaii in the 80s and 90s. I learned how to speak pidgeon with my friends and loud haole with my family. I never got a “talk” about code switching and have had to improve my social skills on my own.
I mean, look, I use a power wheelchair and grew up in wealthy suburbs north of Atlanta. The dynamics are crazy. The way to navigate the world gracefully is not to try to MAKE other people be comfortable around you, it's to LET other people be comfortable around you.
