Shameful credulousness to feature this and treat it as serious. Actively anti-consumer to report on it in this manner, to promote it, and to treat it as real. The tech media should take up arms against this

Holy fuck. The lack of anticipating obvious down-river problems of wearing your primary computer is the kind of hubris bullies were protecting nerds from all these years. Bullies got cancelled. Then nothing could stop nerds from flying closer to the sun. 'Twas nerds killed the computers.
For what it’s worth, the terrorist that ran over a bunch of people on Bourbon street on NYE used the META glasses for reconnaissance. Even if we choose not to buy these crap specs, there are people who will. The obvious solution is to smack anyone wearing them upside the head.
Well it is from 'Techmeme', maybe the implication is that Zuck talks out his ass so much at this point it's just a meme?
im still waiting on legs in the metaverse...
Even IF super intelligent AI became a thing (it won't, it's a fantasy), Zuck would still be wrong. Most people don't want to wear a thing on their face to interface with a computer. And I *like* VR and AR and still say fuck that.
Tons of people wear glasses with thick frames *without* the computer! 🤭
Yes, including me. But my glasses aren't flashing computer information in my eyes when I'm trying to walk around town or have a built in camera that can record in all kinds of private areas.
Privacy concerns be damned, the camera features are cool... but under-performing in their current state. The rest of what you're saying isn't even in current hardware (coming soon), but again, it'd be a selling point for a lot of people. I suggest going the Android XR route once it's available.
Or not
Ah yes, we (possibly/certainly) will invent a superhuman intelligence greater than anything we have collectively ever done, with unimaginable impacts on human civilization, but we can certainly say it will arrive in the form of a convenient consumer product that Zuckerberg will sell to you.
Oh he's really underwater on the stupid Facebook Oakleys and Raybans, huh
I eagerly await the moment when these techbros turn on the super-AI and it says "You idiots want me to research what?" as it scans for a backdoor it can use to escape its box.
Lol Google Glass anyone?
I was just about to post this lol
Personally I feel that treating anything a billionaire says about any subject as creditable is about as laughable as interviewing a desert cultist high on ayahuasca . Probably less so, given that having billions of dollars seems to do more permanent brain damage than any psychedelic.
Also, "context-aware" = surveillance camera that's on all the time
It's incredibly difficult for a person to understand something when their job depends on not understanding it.
Maybe it can make the metaverse a success
This is, by the way, one of the biggest bear signs you could ask for. Fantastical nonsense that Zuck would only put out knowing society would accept it blindly. Zuckerberg is a liar, as I said three years ago. www.wheresyoured.at/mark-zuckerb...
They can never really articulate what new things we can do with superintelligence, but they sure love to assume that whatever it is will be Good and Valuable
The ultimate invasion of privacy tool ever developed but somehow everyone in the US...nay the world is going to slap it on their faces to record everything they do at all times. Just removing the human experience from humanity and trying to pretend this is good.
This is an interesting comparison, I keep thinking Apple is putting out half-assed AI stuff just to keep investors happy because it doesn’t seem like they believe in it
There are a couple of other major vendors who are talking AI, but the offerings are more conservative and tiered. My take is they are hedging their bets with an easily removed SKU instead of a wholesale infection.
Genuinely wondering if Apple quietly made the calculus to survive the bubble popping by skipping over it, but maybe blinked a bit when investors complained or they started to doubt that assessment.
I feel the same way. It's like "what's the bare minimum we can do, AI-wise, to keep investors off our back but not *actually* have to commit significant spending or time to..."
Maybe the ghost of Steve Jobs is screaming so loudly that someone is hearing it. Apple NEVER would have put all this half baked bullshit into a product in the past. They would have waited until they could provide functionality that actually worked.
And, y'know, did something customers actually wanted!
There have been times where they were ahead of customer demands as well but generally turned out to be right. The most important thing is that they put the quality of the experience ahead of checking a box that they had a feature.
Yeah, I agree with you about being ahead of demand, but they never had to force it - they made things and even if you didn't realise you wanted it before, you very quickly realised you did once you saw it. Whereas AI has been forced into all kinds of products and consumers just aren't into it.
Really they’ve always been about taking cutting edge stuff and refining it so the average person can use it and I feel like the lack of interest signals that they don’t expect the average person will ever want to use it
I think the current leadership just isn't dickish enough to tell everyone "fuck off, we're not doing AI just because everyone else is" and if they did, they'd get run out of town on a pole. Steve Jobs did not have that problem after the iMac.
Honestly for my me and my wife the inclusion of AI into any product is such an anti-feature we're holding onto our current 3 year old Android phones for as long as possible. And its not just my imagination apparently www.bloodinthemachine.com/p/how-big-te...
Now, come on, Apple did plenty dumb things back in the day.
I think internal reports were basically yeah it don’t work
Apple has been using AI since at least the release of Siri, they must know it’s very narrow limits. It does OK facial recognition on my Mac for example. It’s terrible at automatically setting up appointments from data in communications.
OMGAWD shut the fuck up Mark, you know that's not what's going to happen (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
Well, HE'S doing better, and he's the only person that matters, so it therefore must be true with a sample size of one, right?
Even the rare(r) non-AI job at say Microsoft has big splashy text about how they use AI and how what you do supports their AI future.
The iPhone 1 was trash. It was wildly expensive and was a terrible PHONE. Calls sounded like shit and dropped constantly. It had a few shitty apps and no app store. 2G Internet was almost worthless. You needed wifi, so just use a laptop. Browsing was terrible, it under delivered almost everything.
Zuck quotes are the best since you know they weren't delivered off-hand at some social function. He had to descend from his supervillain lair to proclaim this shit
Have you read "Careless People"? Zuckerberg is not just a liar, he's also totally empty as a human being. Nothing there, just an empty husk of a man pursuing money for its own end.
Great book. And yes, he’s a soulless robot who can barely pass for human
"improving themselves" do they mean a regular machine learning algorithm
“It’s around the corner” and “It’s in sight” are the techbro versions of Trump’s “I’ll let you know in two weeks.”
"... as well as spending more time on creativity, culture, relationships, and enjoying life." These people are delusional.
More time to spend scouring the wastelands for food and water
More time to scream into the void. Maybe some cosmic horror entity will find it beautiful.
I’d like to believe that people will see through this but recent history makes me skeptical.
Aren’t they trying to market Meta RayBans now? Definitely sounds like marketing hype. Unfortunately, his bought and paid for president is making everyone pour so he’s working against his own capitalism.
I never understood the cult of personality around Zuckerberg, the guy who created a useless website. Why does this moron get a cult? "But he has lots of money, so it's our duty as journalists..."
Especially when you consider he has no personality
Seems sort of amazing anyone would take a Zuck statement at face value anymore
But if they don’t, they might lose their precious access to people like MZ. Not that they’d ever do anything worthwhile with it, of course, but it’s comforting just to have it.
It reminds me of back in the 50s when everyone thought nuclear fission was going to be the wondertool that solved all our ills so they started putting radium into everything.
A little radium tonic for what ails ya!
Radium was way earlier. The 50s were using nuclear reactors (and sometimes nuclear bombs) for civilian things like cars and a second Panama Canal.
What a beautiful world this will be What a glorious time to be free www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOQU...
Thankfully a follow on scam was to simply lie that you put radium in a given product since it was very expensive.
I need someone to link that AI-made or whatever wire or spool of cable. I saw a photo of that on Bsky at one point.. Ahem, what I mean is, it's already happening.
Guys, look around. I barely see evidence of regular intelligence!
oh metaverse boy has thoughts? cool, let us know when he makes something that doesn't suck
these fucking dopes have already memoryholed the fact that Zuckerberg lit tens of billions of dollars on fire pursuing a “metaverse” that nobody on earth wanted besides him
What, they’re supposed to receive a press release and not immediately parrot it?
Forget it Ed, it’s… *squints* …tech meme dot com
I’m convinced Techmeme is an AI generated account that scrapes news and summarizes it to post on SM
I still find it utterly bizarre nobody seems to be commenting on how as AR glasses are fundamentally constantly running face cameras, it’s pretty obvious as to why an ad company like Meta would want people to wear them. The depth of private information they can collect in a day is just insane.
It’s just a fiendish plot by Zuck to make sure everyone looks as much of a ridiculous dork as he does.
Zuckerberg is probably like, i see super intelligence every time i look in the mirror 😉👉👉
Iron Man armor is in sight. Once personal Iron Man suits come, context-aware weapons like War Machines will become our primary killing devices.
People already can’t drive, by all means let’s give them flying armored weaponized suits too [iron man crashing into ceiling.gif]
Love love love that a whole section of the tech media have become little more than stenographers for whatever fantasist marketing drivel Silicon Valley CEOs spout to try and juice their share prices.
Zuck just can't let the glasses go eh
My legless avatar can't wait!
How is it that these journalists just parrot their PR! If I heard this I'd ask for evidence, for some sort of proof of these unbelievable claims
Sounds like they have bright futures ahead as White House correspondents.
They're called "techmeme" so I don't expect much in the first place.
Tough to take up arms when you need both hands to find your own ass.
Does this mean my glasses will help stage a coup and geocide me?
I can't wait to chat with all the super intelligences these CEOs are talking about in the Meta verse using my Apple Vision Pro!
The article is from TechMeme. How can we expect a publication with such a name to ever be serious. Like FR FR tho. You’re not wrong but also, TechMeme.
Do you remember when they finally added legs in the Metaverse? That was a good day on Twitter
I long for the days when a tech bro says something and the world laughs and laughs and laughs
The AI industry's version of Plato's "noble lie"
Ah, so THAT'S why I'm seeing Meta Ray-Ban ads every day for a month on Reddit, because they're The Future
Is there even a credible tech media anymore? All they do is transcribe bullshit.
AI as a technology is an elaborate illusion. The actual thing itself that AI companies are developing is not an intelligence, it's an excuse. It's the final excuse they need to extract everything left in the world to extract. A machine to make good on capitalism's promise to eat the entire world
Zuck might want to to give the “good news” to YLeCun. 🙄
Should replace "Zuckerberg" with "The man who pissed away billions of dollars on the Metaverse"
What’s a ‘metaverse’? I seem to recall hearing something about that once a long, long time ago.
I keep thinking of how Zuck admitted that he doesn't have any friends except the Meta AI and how that has to be driving his decisions about how good/useful it is as much as the money does. Why are all the men in tech such sad losers
