Holy fuck. The lack of anticipating obvious down-river problems of wearing your primary computer is the kind of hubris bullies were protecting nerds from all these years. Bullies got cancelled. Then nothing could stop nerds from flying closer to the sun. 'Twas nerds killed the computers.

For what it’s worth, the terrorist that ran over a bunch of people on Bourbon street on NYE used the META glasses for reconnaissance. Even if we choose not to buy these crap specs, there are people who will. The obvious solution is to smack anyone wearing them upside the head.

Privacy concerns be damned, the camera features are cool... but under-performing in their current state. The rest of what you're saying isn't even in current hardware (coming soon), but again, it'd be a selling point for a lot of people. I suggest going the Android XR route once it's available.

Ed Zitron @edzitron.com

This is, by the way, one of the biggest bear signs you could ask for. Fantastical nonsense that Zuck would only put out knowing society would accept it blindly. Zuckerberg is a liar, as I said three years ago. www.wheresyoured.at/mark-zuckerb...

Personal Superintelligence Over the last few months we have begun to see glimpses of our AI systems improving themselves. The improvement is slow for now, but undeniable. Developing superintelligence is now in sight. It seems clear that in the coming years, AI will improve all our existing systems and enable the creation and discovery of new things that aren't imaginable today. But it is an open question what we will direct superintelligence towards. In some ways this will be a new era for humanity, but in others it's just a continuation of historical trends. As recently as 200 years ago, 90% of people were farmers growing food to survive. Advances in technology have steadily freed much of humanity to focus less on subsistence and more on the pursuits we choose. At each step, people have used our newfound productivity to achieve more than was previously possible, pushing the frontiers of science and health, as well as spending more time on creativity, culture, relationships, and enjoying life. What Jobs was not selling us was a new and foreign concept. We might have had to relearn how we did certain things, but we were not learning new things to do - we were making phone calls, listening to music, and browsing the web. These were all things we did before, done on a new device, in a new way, pitched to us by a charming sociopath. The “new” thing was the idea of a persistent, portable internet connection that was remotely affordable for consumers. While Jobs challenged us to think differently, he didn’t have to spend multiple interviews explaining what the hell an iPhone did. Another thing Jobs didn’t do was massively misrepresent what a product could do or promise impossible things. Zuckerberg, on the other hand, is a charlatan and a liar. He has used his vast wealth and influence to spread a non-specific metaverse gospel to distance himself from Facebook's damage to society. And his cronies are doing the same thing: In response to concerns about the metaverse, Facebook, which recently renamed itself Meta, pointed to a statement from a September blog post by Facebook executives Andrew Bosworth and Nick Clegg that reads, in part, “Meta is not going to build, own, or run the metaverse on its own. We are starting conversations about our vision for the metaverse early, before some of the technologies even exist. ... We’re discussing it now to help ensure that any terms of use, privacy controls or safety features are appropriate to the new technologies and effective in keeping people safe.” The utter vapidity of this paragraph fills me full of bile. In this scenario, what exactly is Meta creating? What is Meta’s product? What are you doing for money? If you were hoping that Zuckerberg himself would answer this, you would be wrong:

Yeah, I agree with you about being ahead of demand, but they never had to force it - they made things and even if you didn't realise you wanted it before, you very quickly realised you did once you saw it. Whereas AI has been forced into all kinds of products and consumers just aren't into it.

A reddit post from peak metaverse hype: cmv: The metaverse is the future and nothing can stop it I find all the hate towards what Zuckerberg is doing, the result of people not understanding the full potential of the metaverse. In my view these people fall in the same category like those in the early 90s who thought the internet was just a fad and wouldn’t have any impact in our way of life. Because like the internet, the metaverse (not necessarily Zuckerberg’s version) is the future of mankind. Future generations are going to look back at how we live now and they will see it as the Stone Age of technology. Watching a movie on a screen and actually not being in it, will seem archaic like peeking through a window. Attending any kind of class for anything at any level anywhere in the world will not just be feasible but for example the dance teacher will look at your body movement and correct your feet as if you were actually there. While the internet connected us at an information level, the metaverse will actually place us there for “real”. Attend events, shows, travel anywhere, go back in time, work full time, meet all kinds of people, go out on a date in Paris, race formula one cars, swim with sharks, have doctors examine you, I could go on and on and on and still not cover what will be possible in the future. All from the comfort of your bedroom. If it will be beneficial or not for our psyche as humans, is a whole other story like the case is today for social media. But this is the natural evolution of technology and like it or not, it’s coming and will transform our lives forever.
