Not a single person seems capable of explaining what Jay has done in any recency. Am I meant to be impressed by this? "It's not the odds it's the stakes" is the perfect kind of obfuscatory and pretentious crap that media people love to quote and ignore, but readers get little out of

A media critic who can't see an endemic problem here - that American journalists will ask a question then ignore the answer and move on - and indeed ignores the poor quality of the answer so that they can applaud the vague question - is not impressive to me. Tell me what I'm missing

I am not reading into a single skeet, I have read his work since 2008. It has a very intellectual way of not saying much. He's made some good points, but seems incapable of making many of them that mattered in the last few years, and honestly I can't even remember the good ones!

They are booking it as revenue using mark-to-market accounting, which means if it drops in value it will lose them money next quarter. Yay!!!! YAY!! IT'S ALL SO GOOD! sherwood.news/markets/nvidia-the-asset-manager-had-a-massive-q2-thanks-to-coreweaves-rally/

Nvidia, the asset manager, had a massive Q2 thanks to CoreWeave’s rally NvidiaNVDA $178.91 (-1.48%) made over $26 billion in net income in its second quarter, putting it third among S&P 500 companies as of their most recent quarterly filing and trailing only AlphabetGOOGL $210.88 (1.64%) and MicrosoftMSFT $506.89 (0.03%). However, if you zeroed in on just Nvidia’s de facto “asset management” arm — which is included under “net other income” — that division would be one of the 50 most profitable companies in the benchmark US index, ahead of the likes of IBM and Caterpillar and just barely trailing McDonald’s. “Net other income for the second quarter was $2.2 billion, primarily driven by gains in a publicly-held equity security,” according to the CFO commentary accompanying the second-quarter results. Hmmmm. “A publicly-held equity security”... To translate: that’s Nvidia’s position in CoreWeaveCRWV $103.33 (6.60%)! The AI darling, which offers access to Nvidia’s GPUs, rose 175% during Nvidia’s fiscal Q2.

it appears that NVIDIA used mark-to-market accounting to say that the gain in their stock value in CoreWeave created $2.2 billion in revenue. No stock was sold. This is just from holding the asset. If CRWV's value drops between now and next quarter they'll have to show a loss for it. VERY GOOD.

Technology Nvidia Forecasts Decelerating Growth After Two-Year Al Boom Nvidia Corp., the world's most valuable publicly traded company, gave a tepid revenue forecast for the current period, signaling that growth is decelerating after a staggering two-year boom in Al spending. Sales will be roughly $54 billion in the fiscal third quarter, which runs through October, the company said in a statement Wednesday. Though that was in line with the average Wall Street estimate, some analysts had projected more than $60 billion. The forecast excluded data center revenue from China, a market where Nvidia has struggled with US export restrictions and opposing pressure from Beijing. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is attempting to reenter the China Al chip market at a time of mounting geopolitical tensions. Photographer: Na Bian/Bloomberg The outlook adds to concern that the pace of investment in artificial intelligence systems is unsustainable. The difficulties in China also have clouded Nvidia's business. Though the Trump administration recently eased curbs on exports of some Al chips to that country, the reprieve hasn't yet translated into a rebound in revenue.

Is it good at NVIDIA missed data center revenue estimates two quarters running? They were estimated at $41.3bn and hit $41.09bn, were estimated at $39.3bn last quarter and hit $39.1bn. Nobody wanted to talk about this last quarter, wonder if they'll pretend again this one

• Nvidia will no doubt report some big numbers in its earnings, due Wednesday afternoon. Whether they will be big enough is a whole other question. Here's what analysts expect for the chip maker's July quarter: • Record revenue: $46 billion, up more than 50% from $30 billion a year earlier. • Data-center revenue: $41.3 billion, up over 50% on the year. • Earnings: Net income of $24.7 billion and record adjusted operating income of $29.1 billion. • Revenue forecast for this quarter: $53.4 billion for the three months ending in October. image

If @edzitron.com being invited on CNN isn't one of the four horses of doom for AI bubble, I don't know what is.

I deeply respect Matt as a person, writer and editor, and he has edited hundreds of thousands of words of my work, he's a true legend

wax to face down to melting my marrow is an insane three track run - give it a go. second album is middling other than the first track which is so good

To be specific, I randomly texted Matt at like midnight saying "wait I have it, this is SO GOOD" and he woke up to 2000 extra words, truly the most fun I've had writing

This happened with "how to argue with an AI booster," which originally had a totally different title and, while mostly the same content, didn't have the very clear threading. Matt is invaluable, an incredible editor and friend

First premium newsletter has gone live. It's a relatively short (sub-3,000 words) essay about how generative AI devalues what it means to be human, and our worth as people. open.substack.com/pub/whatwelo...

Honestly, @edzitron.com continues to be one of the most incisive voices on the subject of AI (and, if we're being honest, its many failings). His HOW TO ARGUE WITH AN AI BOOSTER from earlier this week is also essential.

have you ever heard Killer Be Killed? It's Greg plus some people from soulfly and mastodon, the first three tracks of their self-titled album are probably my favourite opening to a metal album of all time
