This!!! In fairness one of the few reasons we haven’t had massive riots this year is that the people who’d be doing a riot have remembered the scale of the sentencing last time. Which makes it even weirder that Starmer HASNT come out like a freight train on it.

Msybe they saw whatserface last week(?) coming out of prison and being hailed as Nelson Mandela, Sophie Scholl and Princess Di all rolled into one by all the papers, and figured "what's the point"

The justice system is overwhelmed - both in terms of caseload and cell capacity. The government is pushing hard to eliminate as many non-essential custodial sentences as possible. They might want to have another crackdown, but know they can't do so without risking hitting a judicial critical mass.

Ironic considering it’s a problem of their own making, as mentioned last year they did some incredibly harsh sentences for minor offences, to set an example, in so doing they crowded out the already crowded and overburdened systems. There are lots of little cases like this that add up
